Apostles Back House is situated on the northwest coast of the island in the pretty village of Catacol. The cottage is located behind one of The Twelve Apostles, a famous row of pretty and characterful cottages just a few yards from the beach in this tiny village located just a few miles along the coastal road from Lochranza at the foot of Glen Catacol. Several walks can start from the village including alongside the burn towards Loch Tanna; or past Loch na Davie through Gleann Easan Biorach to Lochranza Distillery, returning on the coast road, over the hill on the Postman’s Walk or by bus. Wildlife that can be seen nearby includes red deer, red squirrels, seals, otters, golden eagles, dolphins, and gannets. This village has become known as home to three of the world’s rarest and most endangered tree species. A National Nature Reserve in Glen Diomhan, one of Glen Catacol’s side glens is home to some 300 Arran Whitebeams (Sorbus arranensis), and over 200 Cut-Leaved Whitebeams (Sorbus pseudofennica) and the world’s only wild Catacol Whitebeam (Sorbus pseudomeinichii).
