George’s House was very comfortable, cosy and warm. The views from the house are stunning and sense of peace in the location was lovely. The house was a good base for us to explore Harris and some of Lewis too.

Location is relatively remote, however the rest of Harris is easily accessible. But it is special because of where it is located.

On arriving at George’s House you will enter the main house through the porch –perfect for keeping those muddy/sandy boots and coats. The ground floor comprises the living room with open fire, Freeview television and DVD player, a downstairs toilet with wash basin, and a well-equipped dining kitchen with Rayburn range, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine. The first floor is made up of two bedrooms, the master room with a king bed and built in wardrobes, and a triple, as well as the family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. All bed linen and towels are provided. Just across the driveway, there is a self-contained studio which sleeps 2 people. This space has an en-suite bathroom with toilet, basin and shower and a small kitchenette with hot and cold running water, kettle and fridge. The day bed/collapsible truckle bed can be set up as a double or twin. There is a conservatory to the side of the house, which is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee whilst taking in the fantastic views, and for those wanting to enjoy an alfresco dinner there is a dining table and chairs. A BBQ is also available.
George's House is named after our father, George, who at retirement decided to return to his beloved Harris, buying this house and undertaking the project that turned it into a home. In addition to the work he did on this house, George was instrumental in getting the Bays Community Centre built (you will even see a plaque mentioning his name on the wall there, should you call in) and the Stockinish pier. Mary’s, his wife (and our mothers) family still live next door and in the community. You will almost certainly bump into them during your stay. We are George and Mary’s children’s families. We hope you will enjoy your stay on Harris as much as we have over the years, and that, like us, you will return many times. This is still early days in our venture, so while we have endeavored to cover everything you might need if there is something we have forgotten or which isn’t clear, please get in touch with Marion (housekeeper and our cousin). We’re also always looking for feedback on how we can help to make your holiday even better so at the end of your holiday, please do give us feedback on how you enjoyed your time here.
The house is in Leacklee (or Leac a Li) up on the hillside overlooking Loch Stockinish. It enjoys stunning panoramic views of the Loch and its wildlife, The Minch and, on a clear day, the Isle of Skye. It is approximately a 10 minute drive from Tarbert and the Isle of Harris Distillery in one direction and a 15 minute drive from the outstanding beaches of Luskentyre and Seilibost in the other. It is perfectly located for exploring the North Harris Hills for those keen on getting out and about on foot and for driving along the notorious Golden Road. Harris is the best location in the Outer Hebrides for access to the outlying islands of Saint Kilda and The Shiants. Set in its own grounds in the lovely Bays area on the east cost of the island, the self-catering accommodation sleeps up to 7 adults, with 5 beds in the main house and a further 2 in the annex.
