Originally an old croft (cottage) and byre (cow shed), Gordon House became an Inn in the late 1700’s to accommodate the military barracks in Tomintoul (pronounced “Tom-in-towel”) which was created by the Earl of Gordon to help quash the Jacobite uprisings. In the early 1900’s it was joined to the newly built Gordon Arms Hotel, due to licencing laws that stated you could only drink alcohol in a hotel on a Sunday. Also known as The Grouses Nest Pub, (you can still see the old glass on our front door) which was famous for being part of a financial scandal back in the 1980’s where it and the hotel next door were bought by the infamous self-styled “Laird” Tony Williams, an accountant who embezzled several Million in funds from Scotland Yard and poured money into the village, buying up property and employing locals until he was caught back in the 90’s. At one time there was a local beer named after the Laird which was served behind our kitchen bar. The pub finally closed in 2016 to reopen as our home and B&B in March 2018.
Les & John, having bought the property in 2017, are constantly thanking their guests for staying with them as every penny they make as a B&B goes to the restoration and renovation of this quirky old building. Expect a warm welcome with a dram on arrival, stay for an excellent dinner, interesting and fun conversations and expect to be treated as friends.
