Appleby is a really nice small town, the location of the cottage is excellent. The pubs and shops are a few minutes walk so very accessible. It's only a short drive to the lakes so a good base without actually being in the middle of things...

Neighborhood info

Nestled between the Pennines to the east and the Lake District Fells to the west, the picturesque Eden Valley unfolds along the meandering River Eden. This enchanting landscape comprises lush green countryside, traditional towns, and charming sandstone villages, some of which trace their roots back to Viking times. Heading south, the tranquil Howgill Fells, beloved by the renowned walker A. Wainwright, offer a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts. The River Eden, originating in the Mallerstang Valley, ranks among the finest salmon and trout rivers in the North of England. Delight in scenic riverside walks and encounter the Eden Benchmarks—ten captivating sculptures strategically placed as welcoming seats in dramatic settings. Entirely within Cumbria, the River Eden is unique as one of the few large rivers in England that flows northwards. Originating from the high limestone fells near the North Yorkshire border, it winds its way through eastern Cumbria, flanked by the North Pennines to the east and the Lake District fells to the west, before merging in Carlisle to form the expansive Solway Firth estuary. Spanning 90 miles (145 km) from source to sea, the river's journey is accompanied by the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway, a scenic route preserved in the 1960s by local enthusiasts. Convenient stations at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen make the railway an ideal means to access the Eden Valley. While the Eden Valley today is a verdant and fertile expanse, its medieval history reveals a more tumultuous past marked by vulnerability to Scottish raids. The numerous pele towers and castles scattered across the region bear witness to a turbulent and often violent history. In the heart of this captivating landscape lies the charming town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. Positioned within the Eden Valley, this quaint English town boasts stunning views and a plethora of activities and just 200 meters from the Little Apple Town House.
