At over 1000 feet above the Irish Sea, Thistle thatch cottage is the highest traditional Irish thatch Cottage in Ireland & offers breathtaking views over Tollymore Forest Park, and the surrounding Kingdom of Mourne Mountains - Northern Ireland's only designated National Park. The traditional Irish thatch cottage was constructed during American Independence in 1783, and is easily accessed by car via road - lost within a wilderness of wildflower meadow, Emerald green farmland & cloud shrouded mountains where your only neighbours are grazing sheep and buzzards flying overhead!
I love to see guests reaction when they first arrive at Thistle thatch cottage for check-in - their amazement of how unique and special the historic thatch cottage really is. Walks & cycles from the cottage are my favourite, then returning to enjoy a wee whiskey or two by the turf fire!
Tollymore Forest is an ancient woodland that Home Box Office (HBO) used to film Game of Thrones pivotal scenes such as where the Stark Children found the Direwolf Dog Puppies under the picturesque river bridge, and Thistle Thatch cottage is the ideal base to explore these magical locations from. If you fancy eating out there is a great selection of award winning restaurants, cafes & pubs in Newcastle & Dundrum village, just 10 minutes drive by car from the cottage.
