Ano Syros is approximately 3.5 km from the port of Ermoupolis, 10 minutes by public transport and 15 minutes by foot. It is the continuation of Syros town towards the hill. The entire area is built on the slopes of the hill, at the top of which is the Catholic church of Agios Georgios or “Sa Tzortzis”, as it is often called on the island. The entire settlement of Ano Syros retains its medieval character and has remained untouched over the centuries. Cars are not allowed between the small houses with arches, which is not easy due to the countless steps that cross the settlement. In the past, due to the fear of sea invasions, the entrances to the city were blocked with wooden gates, securing the residents from a possible night raid. The settlement had fortified features and these gates were the only way to enter. You can get to Ano Syros by car, taxi or free public transport (mini bus). The main entrances to the settlement are Portara, Pano Terma, Kato Terma or Kamara, Skalakia and Sa Bastias. You can visit the Markos Vamvakaris Museum, the Museum of Traditional Professions, the church of Agios Georgios at the top of the settlement and the Capuchin monastery.
