Kalyva is nestled in the heart of Oia, Santorini’s most picturesque village. Refurbished in February 2021 over a six-month period, the house honors its rich history while preserving the essence of Cycladic architecture. Named after its original use, Kalyva reflects Santorini’s agricultural past, when farming, wine production, and livestock shaped daily life. Building a home was a multi-year endeavor, with materials like heavy volcanic rock often taking a year to gather. Designed for comfort and climate, traditional homes featured oversized windows, cool spacious interiors, thick walls, auxiliary rooms, and ideal northern orientation — all elements found in Kalyva. Built in the late 18th century, this unique blend of cave and farmhouse architecture — with 3-foot-thick walls, barrel-vaulted bedrooms carved into volcanic rock, and expansive windows — makes Kalyva one of Oia’s most iconic residences, bathed in natural light throughout the day.
