Eretria is a coastal town of Evia, southeast of Chalkida, opposite the northern coast of Attica, in the Southern Gulf of Evia. In antiquity it was one of the most important city-states of the Greek world (6th-5th century BC). Later, however, it ceased to be considered an important settlement and was gradually deserted.
