Alexandroupolis Explore the modern city that was founded as a fishing village in early 19th century and grew into an important commercial center, with its port, airport, railway and highway. Visit the many museums (Archeological, Historical and Ethnological), admire the biggest lighthouse of Greece walking at the promenade overlooking the Thracian sea and enjoy a rich nightlife with many restaurants, taverns bars and cafes. Makri The quiet fishing village with its simple tavernas, little harbour and the Cyclops's Cave right above it, is ideal for a casual lunch or dinner. Archeological site of Mesimvria Zone Zone was a thriving colony of the island of Samothrace. This important Greek colony was established in the end of the 7th century and continued to develop until the Roman conquest. At the archaeological site, near the village of Dikella, one can see among others, the ruins of the marble sanctuary of Demeter and the temple of Apollo. Evros River Delta Just southeast of Alexandroupolis, where the Evros River reaches the Aegean, 188 sq km of coastal lakes, lagoons, sand dunes, swamps and reed beds harbour an immensely rich amount of wildlife. In the spring migrations, thousands of wader birds pause here to feed in the nutrient-packed waters. One of the most important wetlands of Europe is really worth your visit.
