Our family-run eco campsite sits on a hilltop in the heart of Croatia. At Bogata Šuma (“Rich Forest”) we are creating an 8-hectare edible landscape surrounded by forest, owls, and deer. The hand-built shepherd’s hut is nestled in nature, with hammocks and fire pits nearby. Guests love the peace, the pure air, and the starry nights – up to 4000 stars with no light pollution!

We are Barbara and Peter, the family behind Bogata Šuma, our permaculture homestead in the hills of central Croatia. After city life in Amsterdam and Leiden, we followed our dream of living closer to nature – Peter drawn by the forest, Barbara by the vision of a self-sufficient life in harmony with permaculture. Since 2009, we have been shaping our 8 hectares into a thriving, edible landscape. Good food is one of our passions. We grow much of what we eat, and our son Nol is training to be a chef. Guests are welcome to join us for a homemade organic lunch or dinner, prepared with love and ingredients from our land. Barbara also crafts natural hand and facial creams, and enjoys making fermented drinks such as kombucha, kefir, and fruit or flower wines. Some of these creations are available for guests to try or purchase. Our choice to live self-sufficiently is rooted in love for nature, respect for ourselves, and a wish to live healthily. Sustainability, renewal, independence, and care for all living beings guide our lives. We cherish the simple life – eating what nature provides, being grateful for its abundance, and sharing it with others. In time, we hope to grow a small village of people inspired by the same joy.

Our area is perfect for outdoor lovers – enjoy scenic hiking and cycling trails, or take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear river nearby. In the historic city of Karlovac you can explore the Nikola Tesla Experience Centre, visit the fascinating Aquatika freshwater aquarium dedicated to the region’s four rivers, or stroll through the lively farmers’ market (open every morning except Sundays), where local grandmothers sell their fresh, homegrown produce.
