Back Bay Estate is a working arabica coffee farm. We are a gated property, which is why we do not offer smart check in. Guests must be greeted at the gate and led into the property to access the Studio Apartment. We do offer several on site activities for guests that are optional. A farm to cup tour is most popular, however mini workshops on regenerative agriculture, organic composting and the Sensory Cupping Workshop are also available. There is access to Siamang Forest for hiking to the fresh water stream that surrounds three property borders. At night enjoy the fire pit and the night sky, or for grilling dinner or roasting some marshmallows snacks. We do have a preset menu for lunch and dinner that guests can choose from to dine on site. We can also provide a bottle of red or white wine. You will need to contact Lisa to receive the selections and separate pricing for meals and/or wine. Your Breakfast items are included with your stay (adult portions) and are stocked in the Studio kitchenette pantry and refrigerator for preparation on your own each morning. There are always fresh fruits, breads, yoghurts, granola, oatmeal, noodles, eggs and juice and milks provided. Our signature arabica coffee and brewing equipments are stocked in the Studio as well as a generous tea selection. So sleep in or rise early and enjoy breakfast in your own time and pace.

Lisa and Leo are partners originally from USA who started a farm and a business in Sumatra in 2010. Lisa started hosting guests privately in 2016 on the property and joined public hosting platforms in 2025. It is a joy to have guests from around the world share their unique travel experiences with Leo and I. We enjoy sharing the mission of wildlife habitat conservation and the passion for growing and processing arabica coffee. The natural beauty of the estate and the regency of Simalungun is why we choose to live and work in the remote area of Sumatra. The wildlife habitat conservation is an important part of our everyday lives. Reforestation is part of our work and also a passion. We do enjoy cooking together and love animals. Our work is also our hobby and our vocation, so each day is fun and fulfilling. We like to share this with our guests in mini workshops, curated tasting activities, or the farm to cup tour. The Studio is a comfortable and private accommodation for guests who need to escape crowds for a stay, or to rest and regroup for the next leg of their journey. We listen and try to provide the kind of stay each guest requires while they are on the property.

Part of the Caldera Geopark for the great Dana Toba Lake. A short drive away from several lake beach access points or to ferry terminals for onward travel to the island inside the massive crater lake "Samosir". Back Bay Estate is in the highlands surrounding the lake where the world famous Sumatra Arabica coffee is grown. Back Bay is a short drive from a major waterfall attraction. This waterfall has an established stairway hike down 500 meters to the base of the waterfall where swimming is allowed. A 20 minute car ride to local Batak village where there are convenience stores for incidentals and several cafes and restaurants will local cuisine. There is a Bus Stop within walking distance of our front gate. This bus can take you to the village where a Bus Station that offers onward travel to the airport city of Medan is available.
