"The Downs" is an exceptional area caught between bog and forest but not actually either at the same time. Flat pastoral/wooded countryside ideal for cycling and walking. Mullingar is a welcoming tourist & shopping town Hotels, Restaurants, Cathedral, Hanging flower baskets, Trad music, Festivals. Tullynally, Belvedere (castles) Tyrellspass (with castle),Multyfarnhan (cute villages) latter with working Priory all a short car drive away. Loughs Ennel, Owel, Ballinafad and Derraverra (World famous Swans of LIr) all suitable for sailing ,cannoing, fishing Castlepollard andTrim are cute small towns worth a visitand water.
