Hidden away in the centro storico of beautiful Irsina is Casa Santa Maria. The recently beautifully refurbished three bedroom house boasts many of the characteristics of these historic buildings with brick vaulted ceilings and arches, retaining its character with modern comfort.
As well as three large bedrooms Casa Santa Maria has a sitting room, modern kitchen, dining room with patio, and two bathrooms. Upstairs it has a large well sheltered terrace with glorious views, as well as a laundry.
Please be aware that we are legally required to provide guest information to tourist authorities in Matera, so will need to take copies of passport or ID documents for all guests when you check in. This is a legal requirement in Italy and can be confirmed on the Airbnb site. We appreciate your cooperation.
Irsina (known as Montepeloso till 1895) retains its old Norman walls, with a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, arches and gateways dating back many thousands of years. Around every corner is a surprise - be it small churches, the large Cathedral, old palazzo, small squares with fountains, cantina still filled with stores of olive oil and wine.
Irsina boasts a good array of traditional Italian bars and cafes and a choice of restaurants all within walking distance of Casa Santa Maria. Also within walking distance are bakeries, butchers, green grocers, patisseries with that day’s produce, while a number of small shops and supermarkets provide all the basics.
Irsina with its wonderful panoramic views across rolling hills of wheat, its olive groves and vineyards lends itself to walking, hiking and cycling, or to just sitting and admiring.
Irsina and Casa Santa Maria are ideal for visitors to base themselves to tour much of the south of Italy. Irsina is surrounded by many other interesting towns in Basilicata and Puglia, while the sandy beaches of the Ionian and Adriatic are little more than an hour away.
