Castello di Sonnino
Castello Sonnino is a 13th-century historic wine estate in the heart of Chianti Fiorentino, just 20 km from Florence. The estate has been owned by the de Renzis Sonnino family for over two centuries and includes a 16th-century villa, a medieval tower, monumental cellars, and 150 hectares of vineyards and olive groves farmed sustainably. Member of ADSI (Italian Historic Houses Association) and selected by Gucci for the worldwide "Gucci Places" project since 2017. Guests can enjoy tastings of Chianti Montespertoli DOCG, Supertuscans IGT, extra virgin olive oil and honey, visit the historic cellars and the Vinsantaia, and dine at our Enoteca with zero-km Tuscan cuisine. Cooking classes with our chef, yoga sessions, bike tours, and private guides throughout Tuscany are available on request.
This is our home," says Baronessa Caterina de Renzis Sonnino, who lives here with her children Virginia and Leone. For over thirty years the family has been dedicated to sustainable farming, restoration and the preservation of the estate's historic heritage — including the Sidney Sonnino archive, one of Italy's most important collections on World War I, and a rare library of ancient texts. The castle also hosts an international education centre with study abroad programmes in collaboration with American and Canadian universities. We welcome guests personally and love sharing the history of our family and this extraordinary land. Our goal is to preserve these places and their stories for future generations.
The castle is a 5-minute walk from the centre of Montespertoli, in the heart of Chianti Fiorentino, along the ancient Etruscan road to Volterra. Florence is 20 km away, San Gimignano 35 km, Siena 50 km, Volterra 45 km and Vinci is also nearby. Florence airport is just 30 minutes away, Pisa airport 45 minutes. Public buses connect the village to Florence. In Montespertoli you'll find cafes, traditional restaurants, artisan shops and the Museo della Vite e del Vino. The surrounding hills are perfect for walks and cycling among vineyards and olive groves. 1 km from the castle: tennis courts, running track and two swimming pools (adults and children). Pilates studio in the village.
