Podere Marella is, first and foremost, a family story, which began in 1974 when my grandmother, Fiammetta Inga, moved here and decided to build her future amongst the vineyards and the countryside. An independent and determined woman, she taught herself how to cultivate the land and produce wine, working in the vineyard and the cellar and choosing – well ahead of her time – to devote herself to organic farming. In the early 1980s, she opened her home to her first guests, at a time when the concept of agritourism was still relatively unknown. Today, we continue to look after this place in the same spirit: an authentic, family-run farm, where the wine and produce of the land are born out of respect for the environment and a deep connection to the local area. During your stay, you’ll have the chance to discover our wines through a tour of the cellar and a tasting, to be arranged subject to availability. We offer a tasting of four wines accompanied by taralli, including a tour of the cellar, lasting approximately one hour, or a more comprehensive tasting of eight to nine wines, lasting approximately 90 minutes. You can also purchase our wines and other organic produce that we grow and process directly from the farm.

Podere Marella is an old farmhouse nestled in the countryside, on the border between Umbria and Tuscany, surrounded by expanses of vineyards and a woodland of ancient oak trees. It is the ideal place for those who wish to slow down, take a break from their daily routine and spend a few days in the tranquillity of nature. The house is tastefully furnished, preserving the authentic character of its history whilst creating a warm and informal atmosphere. Here, the days pass by to the sound of birdsong, walks through the vineyards and the silence of the countryside. As this is a working farm, during working hours you may well see the tractor busy with seasonal tasks in the vineyard: this is part of daily life on the farm and of the production of our wines. Guests can relax by the swimming pool, which has a bathroom, shower and changing room; play tennis on our synthetic clay court; stroll through the vineyards and the woods; or spend time by the small farm lake, where fishing is permitted. Breakfast is included and is prepared with particular attention to quality and variety. You’ll find fresh bread, butter, honey, a selection of jams – some made by us – yoghurt, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, croissants or other baked goods, milk, Nespresso coffee and a selection of teas and herbal teas. For guests who prefer a savoury breakfast, we also offer cold cuts, cheeses and tomatoes. Just 4 km away, in the village of Petrignano del Lago, there is a small supermarket with an excellent butcher’s. For a wider selection, Castiglione del Lago is about 11 km away and offers larger supermarkets and a wide range of amenities.

Podere Marella is situated in a peaceful yet strategic location, ideal for exploring some of the most beautiful spots in Umbria and Tuscany. To get around freely and reach the villages, restaurants and attractions, we recommend having a car. If you only have one or two days to spare, our first recommendation is to visit the historic centre of Castiglione del Lago, which is about a 12-minute drive away. Overlooking Lake Trasimeno, it is a charming village to explore on foot, with its ancient fortress and distinctive triangular-based tower. The beaches and lakeside promenades are just a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Panicale is also well worth a visit; it’s one of the most charming villages in the area, perfect for a stroll through its narrow streets, squares and scenic views of the countryside. If you have an extra day, you can take the ferry from Tuoro sul Trasimeno to Isola Maggiore and spend a few hours on the lake. Cortona is about 24 minutes away, whilst Montepulciano can be reached in about 28 minutes. Città della Pieve is about 39 minutes away. There are many excellent restaurants in the surrounding area, ranging from the most authentic trattorias to the most refined establishments. The nearest railway station is Terontola-Cortona, but if you want to stay with us in comfort and explore the surrounding area, a car is highly recommended.
