Akitsu is located in a lovely low key village 3km from a beautiful post town on the Nakasendo Trail. We were able to ride pushbikes into the town and we were lucky to be there during their wood carving festival. Akitsu is beautifully styled. The...

Akitsu is a guesthouse and shop in a traditional kominka-style farmhouse, tucked away in a small woodcarving village in Shiga, Japan. Staying at Akitsu is an opportunity to experience a different pace — a chance to escape and unwind from the busyness of life. To breathe fresh mountain air, put your feet in an ice-cold stream. To wake up late, to the smell of fresh coffee. To take it slow. It’s a reminder that efficient isn’t always best — sometimes the slow path is the better path. Well-made, lasting, imperfect. The Ryokan: up to two people, inclusive of hinoki ofuro soaking tub, wifi, desk, fridge, air-conditioning / heating, and complementary bicycles. optional extras: continental style seasonal breakfast consisting of breakfast bagels in summer or over-night oats with seasonal fruits in winter paired with juice, and mini-bar selection. Accessing the Guesthouse: The closest station to Kaminyū is Samegai (2.8km away), but most guests arrive via Maibara Station (8.6km away), which is on the Shinkansen line—perfect for travelling from Kyoto (18mins), Osaka (34mins), or Tokyo (2hrs 15mins). You can access the guesthouse via taxi from Maibara station (Approx. 15min drive). Alternatively, hiring a car is recommended as it will give you more freedom to explore Kaminyū and beyond in all weather conditions! I recommend hiring one from Maibara Station (there are plenty of options—book ahead!). *Free Parking available on-site.
I am a Fashion Designer, Innovative Product Developer and Illustrator from Sydney, Australia. I decided to pursue the adventure of relocating to Japan and undertaking a different type of creative project: to bring a 100 year old Kominka back to life. I have spent the last 18 months renovating Akitsu and pouring myself into every detail. I can't wait for you to experience this magical place for yourself.
Experience the tranquility of village life in rural Japan. Kaminyū is a small village tucked away in a valley at the foot of Mt Ryōzen with the Nyū River running through the heart of it. Home to many talented craftsman and artisans, Kaminyū is famous for its woodcarving and butsudan altar making.
