“From a traveler, to a temporary resident of this town.” Tokinoma is a private traditional Japanese house in the heart of Iida City, Nagano, reserved for one group per day. More than just a place to stay, it is a place to experience the beauty of everyday Japan, local culture, and the warmth of a small mountain town. Designed and operated by Neue, an architectural design studio based in Iida, Tokinoma was created with the belief that a memorable stay is not only about the building, but about the time and connections created within the town. Renovated from a 50-year-old traditional Japanese confectionery shop and residence, Tokinoma combines the charm of an old Japanese home with modern comfort. Original features such as shoji screens, earthen walls, and tatami rooms have been carefully preserved. From the windows, guests can enjoy views of the Ina Valley townscape and mountains while relaxing in a peaceful space between the town and the sky. Surrounded by the scent of tatami and the atmosphere of traditional Japan, you may feel a sense of nostalgia and comfort, even in an unfamiliar place. Because we live in Iida, we can share the hidden treasures of this town—seasonal scenery, local restaurants loved by residents, traditional culture, and the everyday lifestyle that cannot be discovered through sightseeing alone. During your stay, enjoy Iida’s traditional sweets and matcha tea in our tea room. Depending on availability, we also offer a traditional tea ceremony experience. Cultural activities such as mizuhiki craft and Japanese confectionery making can be arranged upon request. Guests have exclusive use of approximately 80㎡ across the 3rd and 4th floors: * 3rd floor: two tatami rooms, dining kitchen, shower room, and toilet * 4th floor: two tatami rooms and a traditional veranda space The flexible layout allows families and groups of friends to enjoy the space comfortably, just like living in a Japanese home.
We are Neue, an architectural design studio based in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, and the designers and operators of Tokinoma. For us, creating an accommodation is not only about designing a beautiful building. We carefully consider how guests spend their time in this town and what kind of memories they will take home with them. Because we live and work in Iida, we know the seasonal landscapes, local culture, and everyday life that make this place special. We would love to share not only the well-known sights, but also the hidden charms of the town—the restaurants loved by local residents, the stories behind the streets, and the quiet moments of daily life. Through Tokinoma, we hope to offer a stay that allows guests to experience the authentic atmosphere of Iida and feel a deeper connection with this unique part of Japan.
Tokinoma is located in the heart of Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, making it an ideal base for exploring the Minami-Shinshu region. Within walking distance, you can visit Iida Zoo (free admission), the Iida City Museum of Art, the Kawamoto Kihachiro Puppet Museum, the Apple Tree Avenue, and Sankei-tei Honkan, a hilltop ryokan offering day-use hot spring baths. Strolling through the town is a wonderful way to experience Iida’s culture, history, and everyday life. Iida is also known as a gateway between the Japanese Alps and Ise Grand Shrine. The city is approximately a 2-hour drive from Nagoya and 3.5 hours from Tokyo. Popular destinations such as Magome-juku, a historic post town on the Nakasendo Trail, are about 40 minutes away by car, while Tenryukyo Gorge is around 20 minutes away and the picturesque Shimoguri-no-Sato, often referred to as one of Japan’s original rural landscapes, can be reached in about an hour. Tokinoma is perfectly situated for discovering the many attractions of Minami-Shinshu. The neighborhood is home to a variety of local favorites, including traditional izakayas, regional restaurants, and long-established Japanese confectionery shops. In the evening, enjoy wandering through the town and discovering hidden gems at your own pace. In the morning or afternoon, savor local wagashi sweets and experience the gentle rhythm of everyday life in Iida. We are also happy to provide recommendations for sightseeing, dining, seasonal events, and local experiences, as well as assist with restaurant reservations. We hope your stay offers more than sightseeing alone, allowing you to discover the culture, traditions, and daily life that make this region unique.
