Nishikitsuji—a quiet neighborhood located just a short distance from the bustling areas of Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park. Nestled snugly between modern buildings stands a small, charming one-story house built in 1971. This is "kitsuji," a private vacation rental that I have thoughtfully restored with my own hands. At the entrance, a textured Nara-sarashi (traditional local hemp) noren curtain gently welcomes you.
Step inside, and you will find a space filled with the warmth of handcrafted details. The original wooden pillars and beams, hidden behind walls for decades, have been intentionally exposed to showcase the beauty of time and aging. The shikkui (traditional plaster) walls, which I applied myself, may not be flawless, but their imperfections create soft shadows and a comforting texture.
In the kitchen, we provide Shigaraki-yaki earthenware, chosen for its earthy texture that harmonizes perfectly with the vintage house. The sleeping area, gently enclosed by plaster walls, offers a cozy, cave-like retreat where you can unwind and find deep peace.
The surrounding area is dotted with local eateries loved by residents but rarely found in guidebooks, allowing you to immerse yourself in the gentle flow of Nara’s everyday life. Beyond just sightseeing, we invite you to savor the stillness of the town in the mornings and evenings, and truly breathe in the local atmosphere. "kitsuji" is a place where you can experience the 'high-quality ordinary.' Let your journey in Nara begin right here.
Thank you for visiting our page. I am Ryunosuke, the owner of kitsuji.
I am an avid traveler myself and often venture abroad on solo trips. Through my journeys, I have always been deeply moved by the warmth of the people I met and the unique ways of life in each place. Having been a traveler, I am dedicated to guiding and supporting you with care, ensuring your stay in Nara is both safe and unforgettable.
I fully renovated this tiny house with my own hands. While some details, like the hand-plastered walls, may not have a flawless professional finish, I hope you will appreciate these imperfections as part of the unique character, warmth, and charm of handcrafted design.
If you like, I would be delighted to recommend some of my favorite local restaurants nearby. I am here to help you experience Nara like a local, so please feel free to reach out at any time.
I truly look forward to welcoming you to kitsuji!
