■ Karuizawa (1 hour by car) Karuizawa is about a 1-hour drive away. During peak season, traffic can be heavy, so if you'd like to explore beyond Karuizawa itself, we recommend approaching from the Saku area to enjoy the surrounding sights as well. ■ Michi-no-Eki Oasis Nanmoku / Road Station Oasis Nanmoku (30 minutes by car) You can purchase locally sourced produce and ingredients here. In summer, there's a river right nearby where you can enjoy playing in the water. If you're feeling hungry, meals such as curry are also available. The soft-serve ice cream and bagels are delicious — definitely worth a try! If you arrive early in the morning, you may also be able to pick up some Shimonita green onions. ■ Hamadaira Onsen Shioji-no-Yu (45 minutes by car) A hot spring resort nestled among the mountains. The open-air bath, with sunlight filtering gently through the trees, is wonderfully relaxing. ■ Gunma Safari Park (1 hour by car) A well-known animal theme park that needs no introduction. While outdoor zoos can get hot in summer, here you can enjoy the animals from the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle. ■ Gunma Museum of Natural History (1 hour by car) A museum in Gunma Prefecture themed around the Earth and life.
