This area retains the atmosphere of both a fishing village and a farming village, and is also home to rare cultures and festivals, making it highly recommended for exploring on foot or by bicycle. Traditional Culture At Ryū Shrine (Kyūō Ryū Shrine) in Kyūō, the “Shipborne Lion Dance” is dedicated during the annual Grand Festival in May. This is a highly thrilling traditional performance where a fishing boat (or lion boat) is floated on the sea, and a “human tower” art form (where people stand on each other's shoulders) is performed atop it. The human tower features advanced techniques like three-tier and four-tier formations, making a strong impact on spectators. This Ryū Shrine is also featured on Imabari City's “Human Tower Map” and is significant as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Ryū Shrine is a venerable shrine deeply rooted in the local community. It is associated with the worship of the water deity (dragon god) and serves as a place to pray for safe voyages, abundant fishing, and bountiful harvests. Furthermore, the Kūō Jizō Hall is located in the area and has been revered as a pilgrimage site. Nature and Landscape The Kūō district faces the sea, offering a picturesque area with quiet, tranquil coves. The local coastline and rocky shores boast beautiful natural scenery, ideal for strolls. The nearby Kamoike Coast is a stunning viewpoint spot. Climbing Tobigarasuyama offers panoramic views of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the Shimanami Kaidō.
