Truly special place to stay because it’s part of this old religious tradition and thousands of pilgrims to the mountain have stayed here before you. It’s also family owned. The food is unique, and the preparation and presentation is excellent. A...

I think it’s important to recognize that rating a temple stay isn’t like rating other accommodations since you’re likely staying for the experience, not just a bed. Things we enjoyed about this stay: —so helpful and interesting to have...

A shukubo (temple lodging) in Toge, the historic gate town at the foot of Mt. Haguro. The main building is a traditional copper-roofed structure whose posts and frame remain as they were when it was first built. Its age brings a few small inconveniences, but also a rare chance to step away from daily life into a space filled with history and quiet. Meals are built around traditional shojin (Buddhist vegetarian) cuisine, with local fish dishes added - approachable for everyone. Please let us know of any dietary needs or allergies. If you wish, you are welcome to join our morning prayers (optional and free, regardless of faith). In the crisp early-morning air, you may feel something quite different from everyday life.
Welcome to Shukubo Daishinbo. I am Kazuhiro Hayasaka, your host. For generations, my family has welcomed pilgrims and travelers to the sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan. A stay at a shukubo is more than a place to sleep - it is a chance to feel the quiet spirit of these mountains. My staff and I look forward to making your stay warm and memorable. Please feel free to ask us anything during your visit.
