Rukgala lies around 45 minutes east of Kandy, pretty much in the middle of Sri Lanka. Set on the shores of the Victoria Reservoir, the retreat is surrounded by small villages and a scattering of homes along the lake’s edge. We sit on the fringe of Sri Lanka’s Dry Zone, but at an altitude of about 600m the climate remains pleasantly warm without being uncomfortably hot. From Rukgala you can see the peaks of the Knuckles Mountains and the tea estates that carpet the foothills.
