De Krukel and De Boem are owned by Beatrijs Smulders and Roel van Dalen. Beatrijs is a midwife and founder of the well-known Amsterdam Birth Centre. For decades, Beatrijs has been the figurehead of Dutch midwifery, in which home births play such an important role. Beatrijs is also a publicist and author of various bestsellers such as “Veilig Bevallen” (Safe Childbirth), “Veilig Zwanger” (Safe Pregnancy) and “Veilig door de Kraamtijd” (Safe through the Postpartum Period). She is also writing a major autobiographical trilogy about women, sex and love. The first part, “Bloed” (Blood), was published in 2021 and “Oogst” (Harvest) in 2024. The third part, with the working title “Bloot” (Naked), is scheduled for early 2027. Beatrijs is married to filmmaker Roel van Dalen. His well-known works include documentary series such as “Een Koninklijk Gezelschap” (A Royal Company) about the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, “De Kinderen van De Hondsberg” (The Children of De Hondsberg) about mentally disabled children, and the documentary “Ajax: Daar Hoorden Zij Engelen Zingen” (Ajax: There They Heard Angels Sing). Roel also makes music. His first album, “Altijd gaat voorbij” (Everything Passes), featuring songs he wrote himself in Dutch, was released in 2013, his second album, “Mijn Dag” (My Day), in 2019, and his third, “Waarheen we gaan” (Where We Are Going), in 2026. His music can be listened to on all streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.

Our two holiday homes on Texel are called De Krukel and De Boem. The gardens of these cottages border each other and are situated at the edge of the woods. Our cottages are located in a central spot on the island. The beautiful beach of Texel is a 15-minute walk away. The place is hidden behind the dunes and the forest, which acts as a large windbreak. Because of this, the sea wind passes high over our spot and it is always as good as windless. This is in contrast to the other side of the island, where it is very often windy. The clouds always blow quickly over the island, which is why Texel has more hours of sunshine than the rest of the Netherlands. At our place, the sunrays feel pleasantly warm early in the year due to the lack of wind. Our cottages are not standard holiday homes. Not high-tech, sleek and modern, but vintage cottages from the 60s, with a homely atmosphere, without the functional, often chilly furnishings that characterise many cottages on Texel. The cottages have a cosy interior, wooden floors and bookcases. Even if you only stay for a few days, we like it when you feel at home in an atmospheric environment.

An important note: unfortunately, we have had to substantially increase the rental prices of our cottages against our will, as the government has raised the VAT rate from 9% to 21%. A word about the sleeping situation: In the large bedroom, the 'master bedroom', there is a large double bed (hundred and eighty - two hundred and ten cm). The other bedroom has a slightly smaller double bed (hundred and sixty - two hundred cm). A maximum of four people can stay in 'De Boem'. You need to bring your own linen, namely fitted sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers for the large double bed (with a duvet of two hundred and twenty - two hundred cm) and for the other, slightly smaller double bed (with a duvet of two hundred and two hundred cm). You must also bring your own towels and tea towels.
