Company info
Casa de Mono is a privately owned, family run villa created by Cassandra, Eve, and Wayne, a South African trio who fell in love with the raw beauty, warm people, and wild nature of Bocas del Toro. What began as a dream shaped by years of travel has grown into a place we now share with guests from around the world.
The villa was designed to feel relaxed, welcoming, and connected to its surroundings, blending simple comforts with the natural rhythm of island life. Open air spaces, tropical gardens, and shaded outdoor areas are at the heart of the experience, encouraging guests to slow down, spend time outside, and enjoy the unique character of the Caribbean. It is not a polished resort, but a thoughtfully cared for home that reflects the laid back spirit of Bocas.
We believe travel is about connection to nature, to new cultures, and to yourself, and we have woven practical comforts, local knowledge, and personal touches into a stay that feels both easy and authentic. While we do not live on the property, we are nearby in Playa Bluff and available if needed. You may see us around from time to time as we check on the gardens or assist guests, and occasionally meet our daughter Luna, our curious little jungle explorer.
Our greatest joy is helping guests experience Bocas in a meaningful way, and creating a place where people feel comfortable, relaxed, and at home while exploring the island. Our style of hosting is friendly but hands off. Guests enjoy the freedom of a self guided stay with the reassurance that help is always nearby if needed. We are happy to share local recommendations, arrange trusted tours, or assist when something comes up, but we also respect your privacy and space. Casa de Mono is best suited to travellers who appreciate a relaxed, independent experience, enjoy outdoor living, and understand that island life comes with its own natural rhythm and occasional unpredictability.
Property info
Casa de Mono is a handcrafted hardwood villa nestled in lush jungle gardens between Bocas Town and Playa Bluff, where mornings begin with the sound of howler monkeys and easy walks to the sea. Staying here means you are close to some of the archipelago’s most beautiful beaches and best loved restaurants, while still immersed in the natural beauty of Bocas del Toro. From nearby surf breaks to wildlife sightings right from your porch, you will experience the rhythm of the island like a local.
Designed as a relaxed bed and breakfast style villa rather than a hotel, Casa de Mono offers simple self check in and a more personal, independent stay. The property includes four private, self contained units that can be booked individually or together, making it ideal for couples, families, or small groups who want both connection and privacy. Most of the villa’s magic happens outdoors, with hammocks, tropical gardens, and spaces to relax and unwind.
Good to Know: Casa de Mono is a traditional Caribbean style wooden villa, and sound can travel more easily than in concrete buildings. Each unit is private, but the property and gardens are shared with other guests unless the entire villa is reserved. Even with a full villa booking, you may occasionally see us, cleaners, gardeners, delivery personnel, or maintenance staff on the property as part of normal operations.
We are located within a friendly local community just a few meters off the beach road to Playa Bluff. Most days and nights are peaceful, though you may sometimes hear neighborhood sounds or music from the popular beach bar and restaurant across the road, especially on weekends or special events. White noise machines are provided in each bedroom.
You will be surrounded by thriving tropical gardens and wildlife, including birds, geckos, and insects that are part of everyday island life. This is not a remote jungle retreat, but a lively island setting close to the community with easy access to all parts of the island.
Neighborhood info
Casa de Mono is located in Big Creek, one of the most desirable residential areas on Isla Colón. The neighborhood offers a balance of convenience and nature, positioned between the lively center of Bocas Town and the beaches and surf breaks along the road to Playa Bluff. It is an active coastal community with homes and restaurants nearby, making it easy to enjoy island life without feeling isolated.
The villa sits about 80 meters from the shoreline, where a small reef protected cove offers calm water for a quick dip, snorkelling, or simply relaxing by the sea. This sheltered area is popular with both locals and visitors and is often used for swimming, morning coffee, or sunset views. Surfers will appreciate that the well known breaks at Tiger Tail and Paunch are just a short walk away, and it is common to see people heading down the road with boards under their arms.
Food, drinks, and activities are all within easy walking distance. Directly across the road is Skully’s, a lively beachfront restaurant and bar with a swimming pool, small beach, and occasional live music or events. Next door is Ciao Pizza, known locally for wood fired pizzas, and a few minutes' walk away you will find Dosha Café for breakfast, smoothies, and coffee. A scenic five minute walk brings you to Ohana, a beloved beach restaurant located right at the Tiger Tail surf break. A small minimarket is across the road for basics.
Bocas Town, where you will find the airport, main docks, water taxis, markets, and nightlife, is about an 8 to 10 minute drive away. Because of the surrounding coral reef along this coastline, boats cannot dock near the property, so all boat tours and transfers depart from town. Taxis pass frequently along the main road in front of the villa and are the easiest way to get around, and fares are generally inexpensive. Rental options for scooters, quads, and e bikes are available directly across the road, and there is parking available in front of the villa.
