Capelo is untouched nature, volcanos and sea. Nowadays, the village of Capelo occupies a total surface of 25,93 sq km, divided into the places of Canto, Capelo, Areeiro, Ribeira do Cabo, Varadouro and Norte Pequeno. It is one of the most important touristic sites in Faial, where one can admire the effects of the eruption of 1957/58, during which the volcanic ashes covered the houses and fields that fit into its natural landscape. In the village, we recommend visiting the Handicraft Centre of Capelo and the Forestal Park of Capelo. Varadouro, an ancient fishing port, is today mainly a summer seashore resort, with a great bathing area. Following the secondary road of Vale Formoso, with a length of around 6 km, we can observe several belvederes and get to know in detail the coastal landscape, with its abundance of Erica azorica (tree heath), Myrica faya (Azorean Candleberry Tree), Picconia azorica and Pittosporum undulatum (Cheese Wood). Close to the Capelinhos lighthouse, the Interpretation Centre of the Capelinhos Volcano, inaugurated in 2008, is a place where its visitors can get scientific information on the phenomenon and where are presented exhibitions related to volcanism
