The heart of the old Terre-Sainte has a certain way of life and there emerges from this district a solidarity between the inhabitants. The alleys give a special character to this place which still has many Creole huts. While being anchored in traditions, Terre-Sainte is looking to the future by developing its University Institute of Technology (IUT) and its Sud Réunion Hospital Center (CHSR). Situation The Terre-Sainte district constitutes an entity in its own right in the agglomeration of Saint-Pierre. Separated from the city center by the River Abord, the village benefits little from its influence. Atypical, traditional village, the inhabitants are attached to their land but also to the sea. Terre-Sainte is also called a “fishing village” History The arrival of the population of workers and artisans took place with the construction of the port of Saint-Pierre in the middle of the 19th century. Terre-Sainte is renowned for being the fishing village with coastal artisanal fishing which developed around 1880
