We had such a wonderful stay in the farm - everyone was so friendly and accomodating. We were able to do a tour of the farm and see the cows. They were also kind enough to lend us their bikes, including a toddler seat which was an added bonus....

Company info

The story of COBOR Biodiversity Farm is one of transformation, conservation, and community development. In 2007, Danish philanthropist Markus F. Jebsen purchased approximately 500 hectares of agricultural land in and around the Transylvanian village of Cobor. The land was acquired from former owners who had left the village and no longer used it. He also purchased several houses that had been abandoned for more than 20 years and were in an advanced state of decay. In 2016, Markus donated his company—which included the land in Cobor, several houses, and 1,000 hectares of forest in the Făgăraș Mountains—to Foundation Conservation Carpathia. This Romanian non-governmental organization aims to establish a globally recognized wilderness reserve in the Southern Carpathians, supporting biodiversity and local communities. Between 2016 and 2018, the Swiss Temperatio Foundation awarded three grants to Foundation Conservation Carpathia. These funds were used to transform the land and houses into a fully functioning biodiversity farm. Since then, COBOR Biodiversity Farm has become a model of successful conservation entrepreneurship, supporting local development while maintaining a harmonious balance with the surrounding environment.

Property info

COBOR Biodiversity Farm is an authentic retreat in the heart of Transylvania, where nature, conservation, and rural life blend harmoniously. Set among rolling hills, high nature value grasslands, and ancient oak and beech forests, the property offers a rare experience far from urban bustle. COBOR is more than just a place to stay—it is a conservation and community development project. Guests can explore some of Europe’s last unspoiled grasslands, observe birds, insects, and plants that have disappeared from many other regions, and admire emblematic animals such as our Transylvanian Grey cattle—an almost extinct breed. Accommodation is thoughtfully integrated into an authentic rural setting, featuring responsibly restored traditional architecture. Guests can enjoy cycling, hiking, birdwatching, guided farm tours, horse-cart rides, outdoor dinners, glamping, or peaceful evenings under the starry sky. COBOR is the ideal destination for those seeking nature, authenticity, meaningful experiences, and a genuine connection with the local landscape and community.

Neighborhood info

The village of Cobor is one of the oldest documented settlements in Brașov County, first mentioned in 1206. It lies in the picturesque Hârtibaciu Valley, surrounded by gentle hills and forests. The Transylvanian hills host some of Europe’s last untouched high nature value grasslands, making Cobor an ideal place for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management. Nestled among extensive beech forests, ancient oak trees, rolling hills, and fertile meadows, the farm offers an authentic glimpse into rural life. A key local attraction is the Cobor Fortified Church, built in the 15th century and surrounded by defensive walls and towers—an impressive example of Transylvanian Saxon fortified architecture. Within an hour’s drive, guests can visit other popular attractions such as the UNESCO-listed village of Viscri or the Făgăraș Fortress, while the surrounding landscapes offer excellent opportunities for outdoor exploration and adventure. Experience the enchanting beauty of the surrounding nature in a calm and captivating setting. Here, you may encounter birds, insects, and plant species that have disappeared from many other parts of Europe. We are especially proud of our commitment to preserving the native Transylvanian Grey cattle—an almost extinct breed with remarkable genetic traits. Discover the beauty of Transylvania’s rolling hills and ancient oak forests. Whether you prefer cycling, birdwatching, hiking, or simply enjoying slow, peaceful days, Cobor is the perfect destination for those seeking authenticity, Transylvanian traditions, and a memorable cultural and natural experience.
