Welcome to what is said to be the oldest house in Stockholm! During the middles ages trades that used fire, such as bakeries, smokehouses and blacksmiths were forbidden within the city walls. Fire within this area could be devastating at the time, and has destroyed many wooden buildings. But in 1320 Staffan the Swordsmith built a two-storey house of stone, using the eight meter city wall as his back wall, and the cobblestone street as the floor of his smithy. Three meters below what is today Västerlåggatan 51, the original cobblestones remain intact. By 1601 Stockholm had grown into a busy port with more than eight thousand inhabitants. Henrik the Painter expanded the original house of Staffan, adding stables on the ground floor, and 3 floors on top of the original smithy, and this became Prästgatan 50. Prästgatan 50, being the first house built of brick and stone, has survived the fires that have swept the area of old town several times. The Great Fire of 1625, which lasted for three days and destroyed one fifth of the infrastructure of Stockholm at the time, was stopped by the east wall of this house, preventing the flames from spreading west.

Old town neighborhood is as impressive as the apartment building itself! Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm, and Mårten Trotzigs gränd (Mårten Trotzigs alley), narrowest alley in Gamla Stan, are one of the must–see places in the Old Town. Apartdirect Gamla Stan has windows towards Västerlånggatan. Together with Österlånggatan these are Old Town's most picturesque and busy tourist streets. The city wall that once surrounded the city ran inside these streets along what is now Prästgatan, the street ApartDirect apartments are located. You can actually find the blocks of granite on the backside of the ApartDirect Gamla Stan building, probably parts of the medieval wall that passed through the present property block.
