Trnava is the oldest free royal city in Slovakia and, for several centuries, the main ecclesiastical center of Hungary. The University of Trnava and the University of St. Cyril and Methodius, since 1978 Trnava has been the Slovak seat of the archbishop. In 1987, the city center was declared a city monument reserve. Admirers of art are well aware of the Trnava Music Spring M. Sch. Trnavský. It is an event named after an important composer - a native of Trnava. The international country festival Dobrofest Trnava and the Trnava fair also gained great popularity. HISTORY It probably arose at the end of the 9th century at the crossroads of trade routes as a small market settlement and was called Saturday after the market day. The first credible written report about Trnava dates from 1211, but the privileged charter of King Bela IV is much more important. from 1238, which gave Trnava, as the first Slovak city, the privileges of a free royal city. Trnava reached its greatest growth in the 16th century, when it became an important trade center. In 1543, when Ostrich was occupied by the Turks, the archbishop of Ostrich moved to Trnava with his chapter, and the city became the cultural and ecclesiastical center of Hungary for almost 300 years. MEMORIALS The monuments in the historic center of the city are part of the city monument reserve. Only a few cities in Central Europe can boast of such large sections of the fortification wall. The preserved Trnava fortification is a unique building and belongs to the most important monuments of its kind in Europe. It dates from the 13th to the 16th century. The town tower dominates the square and the whole town. In 1574, it was built on a Gothic foundation by master Jakub, and from its viewing terrace there is a wonderful view of Trnava and its surroundings. Among the most valuable sacral monuments is the first early Baroque building of greater importance in Slovakia - the university church.
