Welcome to The Island in Tucson, a unique 11-acre semi-rural desert art sanctuary and sculpture park located directly adjacent to Saguaro National Park and just 35 minutes from downtown Tucson. This secure, fully fenced property is monitored by outdoor cameras and offers an immersive escape surrounded by quiet nature, majestic desert views, and inspiring art installations.
We offer two distinct, creatively designed rentals positioned 15 yards apart, making them perfect for individual travelers, couples, or groups who wish to book both spaces together:
• The Groovy Glamper: A beautifully renovated vintage aluminum Boles camper styled with a vibrant, colorful retro theme.
• The Time Capsule: An out-of-this-world, eco-friendly tiny cabin featuring a curated, space-age aesthetic. To protect the refined interior art, this space is strictly pet-free and unsuitable for children or minors.
Both accommodations are equipped with efficient heating, air conditioning, reliable high-speed WiFi, and outdoor kitchen essentials (microwave, portable hot plate with pans, charcoal grill, kettle, and French press coffee maker).
Your experience continues outside on a private, wrap-around elevated circular deck featuring an outdoor shower, sink, and an eco-friendly dry compost toilet. We deeply respect our natural desert sanctuary and provide plant-based amenities. Graywater feeds the surrounding trees, and our drinkable water is filtered through a 99% germ-killing UV system.
CRITICAL BOOKING RULES:
• Check-In: Strictly in person between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM. No check-ins are permitted after 10:00 PM under any circumstances. No exceptions.
• Access: Cars are prohibited past the parking lot to protect the landscape. Guests will enjoy a scenic 50-yard walk along a natural desert trail with their luggage to reach their rental.
We live on the property and are easily reachable via text to ensure you have a seamless, unforgettable desert getaway!
Meet Your Hosts: Olivier & Emily
Hello and welcome! We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to our peaceful desert sanctuary, The Island in Tucson. Sharing this magical pocket of the Sonoran Desert with travelers from all over the world is a true joy for us, and we are dedicated to helping you experience the landscape in a deeply meaningful way.
Our backgrounds heavily shape the unique energy of this property. Olivier is a French visual artist who works with painting, sculpture, and land art as his primary mediums of expression. Emily is a feminist activist working passionately in the field of psychology. Together, we are critical thinkers with a shared commitment to deep ecological consciousness and environmental preservation.
We live right here on the property, situated in the breathtaking desert expanse just adjacent to Saguaro National Park. Loving this ecosystem means protecting it. That is why our home and our guesthouses have been intentionally designed and built to reduce our environmental footprint to the absolute minimum. We believe that sustainable living should never mean sacrificing modern comfort or artistic aesthetics. From our purified rainwater filtration systems to our eco-conscious dry compost layouts, every detail is crafted to honor the earth while offering you a premium, restorative stay.
As hosts, we love offering a space where you can unplug, slow down, and truly connect with nature. We highly respect your absolute privacy, but we are always just a text away to share local recommendations or ensure you have a seamless arrival. We cannot wait to share the quiet majesty of our art sanctuary with you!
The Island in Tucson is situated right on the western boundary of the majestic Saguaro National Park, nestled within the peaceful, historic neighborhood of Picture Rocks. Known for its rugged beauty and iconic giant cacti, this area offers travelers an authentic taste of the Old West combined with a vibrant, artistic rural charm. Because we are located in a semi-rural desert environment, the neighborhood has a wonderful, rustic energy. Rather than deep wilderness isolation, you will enjoy a peaceful desert atmosphere where neighbors keep domestic animals, and you will occasionally hear roosters or dogs barking in the distance from houses several hundred yards away. The property itself features our main home and two distinct guesthouses, offering a shared sanctuary layout that feels tightly connected to the surrounding community.
This untouched landscape is an absolute haven for natural wildlife. The property is routinely visited by desert coyotes, lizards like the desert iguana, and unique round-tailed ground squirrels found natively only in this specific part of the world. If you enjoy birdwatching, you will be in paradise; we host an incredible variety of distinct desert bird species.
Our lack of public street lighting transforms the property into an exceptional dark-sky destination for stargazing right from your private deck. In fact, the famous Kitt Peak National Observatory is clearly visible on the horizon. Astronomers and night-sky enthusiasts especially enjoy staying with us, frequently setting up their telescopes and cameras to capture the brilliant stars and the Milky Way.
While offering a quiet, rustic country retreat, modern conveniences and world-class attractions are just a short drive away. We are only thirty-five minutes from downtown Tucson and just minutes from excellent hiking trails inside Saguaro National Park and the fascinating exhibits at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
