Nikki is a lovely host, with an amazing home and beautiful garden. She is so warm and welcoming, you will want to stay there forever. There is absolutely nothing to like here at Braemer house.

The room is great value for money. Exactly what we needed. We needed a room for one night after our daughter attended a party. Room is big and comfortable. Very clean. Bed was comfortable with enough blankets. Shower nice and hot. Host Nikki is...

A colourful mid-century home in suburban Howick. Just a few kilometres walk from the centre of town, shops and restaurants. Should you prefer dishevelled edges to chain store chic, then this space in my home is right for you. Summer night sounds include fruit bats and frogs, in winter a spotted eagle owl is often heard. Rewilding and lighter living are core principles. Sheets will not be ironed, there are no lights on at night, solar jars and gas kettle to deal with load-shedding. I live on a large property with big trees and a wild garden. The house is spacious. Please note that you are sharing my home - it is not separate. Your carpeted bedroom has an extra-length queen-sized bed, a bedside table, cupboards with hanging space and drawers, mirrors, hot water bottles and extra rugs, and a retro chair. It gets afternoon sun through the venetian blinds and looks out onto the garden and adjacent veranda. The ensuite bathroom has a bath and a shower. You have own bedroom and bathroom in my home but are free to use the kitchen, sit in the library to work, relax on the veranda or in the garden. There is no covered parking, but the property is securely fenced and the gate is locked at all times. The mostly indigenous garden is wild and weedy - especially to benefit pollinators. You will come across spiders, butterflies and other creatures. No insecticides or harmful chemicals are used indoors or outdoors. Resident African dog Bean is friendly and always delighted to have visitors. However, once she has greeted you, she will get on with her own life and not bother you. You are definitely staying with me, in my home. My bedroom is just across the passage from yours. I am passionate about Slow Food, rewilding, foraging and living locally. I know all the best spots to find good food, where to forage and which events you simply cannot miss. You might like to book an edible weed experience, local food walk or a wild lunch with me?
I am passionate about Slow Food, rewilding, foraging and living locally. I know all the best spots to find good food, where to forage and which events you simply cannot miss. You might like to book an edible weed experience, local food walk or a wild lunch with me? I have published three books on these topics. I work from home. I like to walk with Bean in the early mornings and afternoons around the streets, or along the river. I believe Howick is the Centre of the Universe.
Quiet, family neighbourhood, where children ride their bikes and skateboard in the streets and play football in the parks. It is perfectly safe to walk around, even at night. I like to walk as there are shops, restaurants and whatever I need within a couple of kilometers. Lots of people cycle. Otherwise, a car is needed as there is no regular public transport. There are meter taxis available. uMngeni River Walk 5mins walk, restaurants on Main Street 10 mins walk / 2 mins drive, Lenmed Hospital 10 mins walk / 3 mins drive, Supermarkets & Shopping Centres 20 mins walk / 5 mins drive, Public Swimming Pool 10 mins walk / 3 mins drive, uMngeni Valley Nature Reserve 8 mins drive, Midmar Dam Resort 15 mins drive, Karkloof Conservation Centre 20 minutes drive, Karkloof Farmers Market 12 minutes drive, Mandela Capture Site 15 mins drive, Midlands Meander starts about 10 minutes drive away. Amber Valley 10 minutes drive, Howick Falls 5 min drive, town centre 15min walk / 3 min drive.
