Hillside is situated close to the N1 between Trompsburg and Springfontein in the Southern Free State. A perfect overnight stop for anyone traveling from Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and even KZN to the Eastern or Western Cape. Accommodation is available in three different lodgings: Len’s Cottage ("Bungalow"), The Tree House ("Studio") and the Old School ("Standard Cottage"). The units are completely different from each other, not only with regard to size, but also style, decor, look & feel, facilities, location etc. There are pro's and cons of each - for example, a cottage which is lovely in the heat of summer (old, thick walls and shaded setting), can be cold in winter! Len's Cottage and the Tree House are set in the main homestead garden with easy access to the swimming pool, while the Old School is way more rustic. It is a little further out onto the farm and the access road is bumpier. Instead of looking out onto an English country garden surrounded by trees, you have a view over the workshop and stable area - the engine room of the farming operation, and a group of sheep may well be your closest neighbours! We are situated about 17km from the closest shops (where the choices are limited!) and we do most of our shopping in Bloemfontein, 140km away. For guest convenience, we do offer a few evening meal options, but we do request that your meal orders be placed ahead of time as we only get to town about every 10 days. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own meals. Hillside is a working farm. This means we have animals (mainly sheep and cattle, and some springbuck, porcupine, jackal, antbear, owls, meercats). Depending on the season, there are varying numbers of flies, mosquitoes, moths, frogs, songololos, swallows, bees, snakes and so on. If you prefer a sterile, predictable environment, you are looking in the wrong place! :-) Mobile telephone signal is erratic, and Eskom electricity supply is not guaranteed. We do have a solar system, batteries and a backup generator that is usually able to keep the lights going but not big enough to power geysers and heaters for extended periods of time.
