Graeme and Karen have spent the past 15 years exploring and researching the Vredefort Dome developing river, hiking and mountain trails. Graeme is a former Professor of Communications and a popular science writer and author of books. Karen is a teacher and passionate about the environment.

Otters' Haunt is situated in the beautiful Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site on the banks of the Vaal river. Easy access to secluded islands it is an adventure and nature lovers’ paradise. We are a private, self-catering getaway (not a resort) with a peaceful family atmosphere in the country. Just 2km from Parys and 120km from Johannesburg and OR Tambo International Airport we are a convenient stop over. Surrounded by water and mountains with numerous activities including Vredefort Dome Tours, rafting, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, bird-watching, and island walking trails. We are also fully on Solar power and therefore don't experience Eskom Load Shedding. We do say however that all our guests should understand how solar power works and that power should be used sparingly, due to the fact that we have limited battery reserves at night. Every night at around 22:00 the power is turned off to prolong the life of the storage units, and then the power comes back on at 07:00. We will provide insight on this and guidance so as to ensure a most enjoyable experience. We also have Free WiFi and the entire property is on very good quality Borehole Water.

Otters Haunt is a 2km drive to the quaint town of Parys with a variety of coffee shops, antiques, restaurants. With the river and mountains nearby there are a host of adventure activities for families, friends and business associates. Parys boasts 2 excellent golf courses, an aerodrome with skydiving and gliding. In walking distance from Otters Haunt is the Dog and Fig Brewery with great food, beer and wonderful sunsets over the Vredefor Dome. Take a drive into the heart of the Vredefort Dome 15km and enjoy a hike through the Bergland with spectacular views and the very popular Old Imperial Inn in the old mining town of Venterskrron for a light lunch or dinner.
