In 1981 Gerard and Jill Marais purchased a run-down house on a very large property in Rivonia. At the time that they bought the property there were still horses stabled at the end of the road. They never dreamed that one day they'd create a lodge with 45 guest rooms and, in so doing, have the adventure of their lives. The idea of a guest house came to them in 1995 when the Rugby World Cup, to be held in South Africa, was imminent. They redecorated 2 rooms in anticipation of the many rugby fans expected to stream into the country. However, these expectations came to naught, as the couple had hardly any experience in hospitality marketing. But it was a beginning. In 1997 they decided to close down their manufacturing business and slowly they began to expand the business. They grew their ‘baby’, and now, in 2026 Rivonia Premier Lodge (as it is now named) consists of 45 rooms, a Business Center and a wonderful staff of 20. Gerard and Jill love what they do. Daily they meet the most interesting people from all over the world. Many of their guests have become firm friends over the years. The Marais's goal has been to create a green oasis in the middle of busy Sandton. They have aimed to create a haven, where visitors can experience a warm welcome and relax in the tranquil surrounds. In this, they believe, they've succeeded!

Rivonia, where people used to own small holdings and keep horses, is now a booming area with luxury homes and apartments,. The area has managed to maintain its rural feel despite rapid development. A few blocks up from Rivonia Premier Lodge is Rivonia Primary School, which is the oldest public school in Joburg. Opposite the school's playing fields is Bookdealers on the corner of 12th Street and Wessel Rd. Justin, the owner, has an excellent selection of second-hand books, Next door to Bookdealers is a delightful café serving the most delectable pastries. The main retail thoroughfare in the area, Rivonia Boulevard, accommodates the Rivonia Square and Rivonia Village shopping complexes with their banks, hairdressers, spas, restaurants and numerous coffee shops. You can experience the world's cuisine from Persian to Italian within the Rivonia surrounds. From Rivonia Premier Lodge it is a 5 min. drive to Netcare Sunninghill Hospital.
