The stand on which The Orion Guest House now stands was originally purchased by Mr E A Nel, the late father of one of the guest house owners. Mr Nel was a respected builder and property developer who worked extensively throughout the Greater Middelburg district for many years. After his sudden passing in 2006, the stand was acquired by his youngest son, Lourens Nel, and his wife, Jackoline. A teacher by profession and a hands on creator by nature, Lourens took great pride in building the home himself. He personally designed and constructed the house as a family residence, where he and Jackoline raised their three daughters for four meaningful years. As time passed, their daughters, much like young fledglings, left home one by one to marry their sweethearts and begin their own journeys in life and business. Having grown up in Paarl, Lourens always valued the company of people and the stories they shared. This love for connection eventually inspired him to persuade Jackoline to transform their family home into a welcoming space for travelers from around the world. On 1 May 2009, the doors officially opened, and the guest house was named The Orion, after the star constellation known as The Three Sisters. The name holds special meaning, symbolizing their own three daughters. Each of the eleven rooms was thoughtfully named after a specific star in our galaxy, reflecting the celestial inspiration behind the guest house. From the very beginning, the vision was to create a tranquil retreat filled with birdsong, peace, and calm, combining elements of antique charm with subtle African character. Today, The Orion Guest House continues its story under the new ownership of Tony Maia and Claudio Maia, carrying forward its legacy of warmth, character, and genuine hospitality.
