If you’re coming to swim with the humpbacks, plan it with the resort which far exceeded our expectations from what we read on Trip Advisor. The whole staff and owners were amazing. The food was always Incredible. The views were absolutely beautiful. We saw whales at our dinner table upon arrival! We loved everything about this resort and plan to return with friends! Thank you, Tongan Beach Resort :)

Good market for fresh produce in centre of town.
Good market for fresh produce in centre of town. Great coffee in some of the cafes, where you can sit and look over the harbour. Whale watching and snorkelling are great boat trips to do, with some good boat guides to look after you. Book ahead to take a ferry to one or more islands but be mindful that weather and breakdowns may delay some ferry trips.
Hire a bike/car and tour yourself around the island. There are also a few easy walks around about town.
A walk up to the fenced bird sanctuary is a must - be prepared to climb many steep steps! Great views, and, if it's quiet, you might be lucky to hear or see some rare birds.

I had the most wonderful stay at Mahana Lodge.
I had the most wonderful stay at Mahana Lodge. Annarine and Rodney are simply phenomenal. When I had issues with flights getting to and from the island they simply made it happen! They always made sure I was incredibly well fed - the food was finger licking good, taken care of, full of chats and safe! The location is simply stunning, the chalets just amaaazing - special mention to the hot, power shower!! 😍 The wifi in the restaurant was super fast, I wish it reached the chalets but ti's a work in progress. My stay was simply amazing and I will certainly be back! 🩷🥰

Great choice of bars and restaurants - would recommend The Kracken, Bellavista and The Basque Tavern. All have views across the harbour. Lots of local, fresh fish dishes. For coffee visit "Coffee & Tees" or Cafe Tropicana (also very helpful with all that you need to know about Vava'u). Would suggest The Tonga Beach resort for lunch on Sunday and a swim.
Fresh produce can be purchased from the local market and the fish market.
Well worth a climb to to the top of Mt. Talau for the spectacular views.

Neiafu is a beautiful, laid-back small town situated on a waterfront bay with unsealed roads, surrounded by islets and islands. While relatively quiet in March, Neiafu becomes more vibrant with tourists around August and the later months, particularly for its renowned whale-watching season. The town also boasts excellent sport fishing opportunities. The people are very friendly, and there are a couple of good spots for meals and drinks. A rental car is recommended for visitors to explore the surrounding sights. Truly a place to shut the rest of the world out.
