Amazing staff here who went above and beyond to make it one of the nicest "airport hotel" experiences I've had. The location is two minutes drive from the airport, the hotel itself is spotless and comfortable, and while I didn't get to try the full breakfast, the staff made sure we had coffee and some food even at 4:45 AM. Highly recommend!

We enjoyed our last two days in São Tomé at Hotel Praia. We had stayed there already a night prior to our journey to the island of Rolas. It was nice to back in civilization after our Rolas trip. Nice to have everything functioning and working well. Great shower, nice bed, everything clean! The front desk personnel was very friendly and accommodating (especially Mr Helder, who, amongst other things, took care of our taxi requests). The salt-water pool is nice and big. Great to be so close to the airport. The restaurant serves a great free breakfast and dinners were good, too. We would go back there!

Hard to find anything bad to say about this hotel - everything works well. The manager is very hands on and obviously well liked by her staff and it translates into an excellent experience throughout. There are copious common spaces to hand out and the rooms are spacious. The restaurant and bar were also good experiences. It was very convenient to. the airport and the airport transfers worked very well.

Location was wonderful. Laurindo took care of the transfers as it is impossible to use a rental car to get there, and took us, for a fee, to town for dinner one night. There was no charge for our transfer from and to the airport. Laurendino also took us to a supermarket before taking us to the Ocean View. One needs to get groceries. He also was kind to arrange two boat trips to Goat Island. We were lucky to have the whole Guesthouse including the kitchen for ourselves. We enjoyed our stay! Thank you, Laurendino!

Happy to have visited São Tomé because it is a hidden piece of the Portuguese colonisation history. I am a South American with African roots but had never learnt that while 1875 is the official date of abolition of slavery in São Tomé, forced labor and slave-like conditions continued on the plantations for several decades, actually until the Isles independence in 1975, 100 years later. I was appalled. International producers of true fair trade chocolate should upgrade their efforts in sourcing from the island small scale farmers and cooperatives. And the diaspora should learn more about this piece of our history and help in whatever way we can, particularly in introducing decent affordable housing, such as a compressed earth block factory and a training center in their production and building techniques.

The landscape is beautiful, the waterfalls are lovely to visit. One can go to Monte Cafe to the museum to discover all about coffee production and sample the product. Across the way, they can visit Firma Efrain, which produces their own brand of coffee and one can participate in the process and see how it is done. A coffee lover's paradise. Firma Efrain is a great place to eat. We had excellent dinners and breakfasts there.

A wonderful place to explore.
A wonderful place to explore. Very much off the beaten path, where tourism has yet to flourish. This can present some challenges, but it's very much a place to get stuck in and explore at your own pace. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world can be found here and all the challenges (poor roads, language barriers, lack of basic amenities) are worth overcoming to experience the nature at hand.
The people are friendly, the island's vibe is laid back and there is something for everyone here. What I will say is that a lot of research and planning is required for a lengthy stay in Sao Tome, it's not a place where you can get by on the fly, you need to be prepared and research everything that you're looking to do.

Sao Tome should be combined with a few days in Principe...
Sao Tome should be combined with a few days in Principe which we did not do. It is underdeveloped in tourist terms - fine for us though. The main attractions need a certain persistence given the state of the roads. Beware goats, dogs, pigs and motor cycles having a different view of how roads should be used. Mostly beware of children. On two occasions aggressive begging by children was excessive. We like to drive ourselves and hiring a driver would probably have deterred them. TAP is the only flight option from Europe. Our flight out did not have the planned aircraft and the substitute did not have the expected facilities and which required an added fuel stop.
