It is an entire house (2 bedrooms and a WC on 2nd floor and everything else downstairs) with a backyard and parking spaces enough for 3 cars. It is situated in a quiet residential neighborhood and the whole house is very clean. It is easy to reach by car and easy to access many attractions in Otsu.

We had a wonderful stay at the Sugoroku Inn! This was our first time staying in a traditional lodging, so we did not know what to expect. We found a charming apartment that was very comfortable and extremely clean. We slept in the western-style beds, which were very comfortable. The kitchen was small but had everything we needed. The living area was spacious and we really appreciated the two western-style chairs and the little table (we are older and not accustomed to the low table and seating). Our host was very responsive to questions, and even provided us with little bike racks for our bicycles in the downstairs hallway since no one was occupying the lower apartment. The outside of the apartment is traditional and low-key, and the inside has been exquisitely remodeled in the traditional manner. The heating worked very well. This was our first time on tatami floors, and while that took a bit of getting used to (slippery for us old folks!) it was fine. Note that for westerners the slippers provided are not easy to use. They are different from “slides” in that they are loose, and the sole is leather so they can be slippery (as noted). Also, for those of us with large feet (I wear a women’s US 11) the slippers are just too small. However, we knew this in advance and brought our own indoor footgear, respectful to the tatami floors.

Location is good, access to various location including Kyoto by either JR, Keihan light rail or bus is easy, the manager is very friendly and very devoted in making the accommodation nice, the neighborhood is very local Japanese, the common room area is very comfortable. Washing machine is a big plus, even though coin laundry is just around the corner.

Old style japanese house Minpaku Yanoya is located in Otsu, just 7.2 miles from Samurai Kembu Kyoto and 7.2 miles from Eikan-do Zenrin-ji Temple.
