I cannot recommend The Secret Garden enough! This place is truly the heart and soul of Cat Ba, offering the perfect blend of social vibes, comfort, and adventure. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and at home. The rooms are spotless, the beds are spacious, and the overall atmosphere is warm and inviting. The toilets are surprisingly spacious, and the showers are incredibly well-designed with travelers in mind—thoughtful touches that make a big difference. But what really sets this place apart is the incredible staff, especially the manager, Easy. He is the heartbeat of The Secret Garden—always leading by example, never just bossing people around. Whether it’s helping with day-to-day tasks or ensuring everyone from guests to staff is having a great time, Easy’s hands-on approach and positive energy are contagious. He’s someone you’ll remember long after you leave. The hostel is packed with activities that make it impossible to get bored. From daily themed nights (quiz night was my absolute favorite!) to the unique herbal foot bath, there’s always something fun to do. I loved the creative opportunities, like painting a mural for a free stay, and the chance to explore the island while earning free drinks and other perks. The boat tour I booked through the hostel was fantastic—well-organized, reasonably priced, and packed with memorable moments. What’s even better is that booking through the hostel costs the same as anywhere else, whether online or with other operators. Plus, booking through them earned me free drinks, which was a nice bonus! The Secret Garden is more than just a place to stay—it’s a community. It’s the perfect spot to meet fellow travelers, share stories, and create lasting memories. Whether you’re looking to explore, socialize, or try something new, this hostel has it all. The host who runs the place is incredibly kind and helpful. He took great care of us and even kept our bags for the whole day after we checked out, which made our last hours in the city so much easier. I would have loved to rate everything five stars, but the guy handling the tours deserves a separate shout-out because he was also great!

We really enjoyed our stay at Happy House. It was a lovely property, very clean with everything we needed, a great location and the owner was super helpful and friendly. As Americans we were not used to how hard that Vietnamese beds usually are, but luckily, there were some thick comforters that we were able to put underneath us to make them nice and comfortable. Highly recommend this property!!

Excellent communication, good advice and help with booking tours. Spotless clean room and bathroom with very efficient Aircon. Very tasty Vietnamese breakfasts, with explanation about the food/ingredients. Eco-minded host, caraffe of water instead of bottles. We booked the cooking class which is highly recommended! Motorcycle available for rent for excursions. Location a bit away from the noisy center, walking distance from cannon fort.

Marvelous! Stayed there for 3 nights and really enjoyed the peacefulness of this very special area of Vietnam 🇻🇳 Breakfast was not that bad either!

Great location in the heart of town where everything is, but off to a side street so it is quiet. Rooms seem newly renovated with a simple and clean interior design (I really like the wooden look). Mattress is memory foam and I found it comfortable. The manager Hien is really nice and helpful and speaks English well. I felt well taken care of and would definitely return!

well done very flexible. That's a few word describe this place. We come to the hotel early seven in the morning even they don't have the room already, but they still let us check in early in another room without any fee 😁😁😁. The breakfast super fresh and delicious bravo.

The family that runs this property is very kind, accommodating, and helpful. They answered all our questions and helped us book buses and tours. The breakfast in the morning was quite tasty too. When I had to cancel because I needed to do a visa run they waived the cancellation fee for me after I explained my situation, which was helpful and alleviated some stress. The room itself was clean and bright, with nice AC and bathrooms. The bed was comfy and they provide extra blankets in the closet. Thank you so much!

Everything was perfect, we especially liked the welcoming and helpful staff. The manager (we think) of the hotel was a super kind woman she helped us organize our next transfer to Cao Bang and gave us water and banana for free.
