I would not have stayed in Sao Luis if I had had the choice.
I would not have stayed in Sao Luis if I had had the choice. We stayed one nights in the historic center on arrival. Absolutely beautiful place but very uncomfortable hotels and few places for tourists. A 1h walking visit is probably enough.
We stayed another night on the way back from a trek into Lencois national park on the beachfront. More confortable but nothing really interesting for foreign tourists.
There is potential to develop this city into something attractive for tourists but it’s not yet enough to justify a stay.

Still trying to work out how much the hotel charged me,because we arrived very early in the morning and surprise guy behind the desk,did NOT speak one word of English!!! ,on checking out was told we were over charged,Still can't work it out yet.

It is a very quiet place.
It is a very quiet place. During the week days there is nothing to do but going to restaurants. There are many of stray dogs and cats, they are homeless and have no food. Some of them were very sick and injured. Nobody cares. The food is very poor and there isn't many choices.

I planned to visit the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park at...
I planned to visit the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park at the middle of the traditional São João Festival, so the city had an amazing atmosphere and there were cultural events all over the old town.
I definitely recommend to visit the Museu do Raggae, Museu da Gastronomia e Casa Museu Tambor de Crioula.
Where to eat? Cafofinho da Tia Dica is a must.

Old historic centre was easy to walk around and the buildings are fabulous. The Palace do Leose - state government official premises has free tours of selected rooms. Beautiful and worth a visit. There was a fiesta on while we were there so much fun, dancing street food etc. Live music options great. Museums good.

I like the city very much.
I like the city very much. The hot and windy climate by the sea is very pleasant. The old town looks and feels great. Food usually is spicy and may give you heartburn if you indulge too much. People are warm and welcoming. What I don't personally like that the beaches are almost all improper for swimming due to water polution. Also the lack of touristic infrastructure and the poor quality of information available mean you need to ask a lot to get around and people generally don't speak English.

We were only there for one night as a stop over to sleep and rest. This hotel is great for that but it is not very luxurious. The breakfast is good value for money.
