Guatapé was one of our favorite destinations in Colombia!
Guatapé was one of our favorite destinations in Colombia! We absolutely loved the colorful streets, the beautiful lake, and visiting Piedra del Peñol. The town has such a charming atmosphere, with beautiful houses, shops, cafés, and restaurants everywhere.
We rented a car, which made it very easy and convenient to explore Guatapé and the surrounding areas. We also enjoyed trying local Colombian restaurants and traditional food.
For families with young children, there are plenty of things to do, including boat rides on the lake, visiting Piedra del Peñol, exploring the colorful streets, walking around the waterfront, and enjoying the many cafés and restaurants. The area is beautiful, welcoming, and perfect for making family memories.
We felt that our trip length was just right, although we would happily come back and stay even longer next time!

Must experience La Piedra Del Penol if you're in the area!
Must experience La Piedra Del Penol if you're in the area! Very cool to go up to the top and see the views! Be prepared for 700 steps of stairs to get the full experience! Take your time and you'll be fine. Plenty of food options at the entrance and bathrooms are located at the top as well.

Everyone I met in Medellín, and everyone who knows the area, recommended I come here — and they were right. It's beautiful, especially if you enjoy nature and water sports. One or two days is the sweet spot for a visit, since there isn't a ton to do beyond the lake and photos
Getting there is also easy. I took an Uber from my Airbnb in Medellín to the bus terminal, then a bus from there for just 25,000 Colombian pesos. The bus stops along the way, so you can hop off at one of the towns before Guatapé if it's closer to where you're staying. Once there, there's something for everyone — I did jet skiing and paddleboarding through the hostel, and most hotels in the area have pools and jacuzzis too. Just keep in mind the weather swings a lot: warm during the day, quite cold at night.

So much to do and see in town and the surrounding areas. 3-4 days barely felt like enough time! The toughest part for us was transportation, particularly in the evenings. Buses run throughout the day and the chivas and motochivas are plentiful when you’re in/close to town, but taxis/ubers are almost impossible so budget extra time to get around!

There are also stores to shop for crafts. I will absolutely go back for a long stay in the future.

Guatape is a pretty town with brightly painted buildings.The lakeside itself is pleasant but not amazing. The town itself feels like it is very set up for tourists with lots of souvenir shops and cafes etc. It's good to stroll around both during the day and at night when the central area is lit up. There is easy access "La Piedra". Both the town and La Piedra are very busy with visitors at the weekend. The views from the top of La Piedra are worth the climb. I spent a couple of days there. I don't think I would have wanted to stay longer.

Excellent location, a 10-minute walk across the bridge from the hustle and bustle of Guatapé town centre. Bakery and food shop each one block from the apartment. Great to have 2 full bathrooms! Each bed had a soft blanket in addition to the quilt.

This is our favourite hotel in Colombia, it is located above the main busy street but also so close to everything. Has a shop and cafe with great coffee and baking. The staff were so helpful.
