FAQs about hotels in Almería

The Moorish Watchtower

Almería lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusía, overlooked by the old Moorish citadel or ‘Alcazaba’. It offers sandy beaches, rocky coves, clear waters, and the typical friendliness of southern Spain. Its urban pattern blends Moorish legacy, medieval buildings, modern architecture, and colourful narrow streets.

It was founded in the mid-10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, and was named ‘Al-Mariy-yat’ or ‘the watchtower’, as it was part of the coastal defences of the Caliphate. After internal divisions in the Caliphate and Christian crusades, the city finally surrendered to the Catholic monarchs a few years before the first trip of Columbus. A range of hotels in Almeria’s city centre will allow you to enjoy this magic atmosphere from a close distance.

The Cathedral of St Mary of the Incarnation was originally a mosque, and was built resembling a fortress, in order to offer resistance to pirates. The nearby Gata-Nijar Cape Natural Park offers beautiful landscapes and beaches. Hotels on Almeria’s beaches are a popular choice, while a variety of accommodation is also available in the surrounding villages of Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, and San José.

The city is serviced by Almería Airport, a local railway station, and a bus station. Ferry services to Tunis and the Spanish enclave of Melilla are also available.

The L30 bus only costs just over a Euro connecting the centre and airport so saves money compared to transport alternatives. Public transport (Alsa bus) to Mojacar is limited. I had to catch the 9am (the next one being at lunchtime) and return on the last one at 16.50. The bus station is outside the main town so catch the local bus (L1 or L2) for a Euro or so), otherwise walk in the sun for 20 to 30 minutes(?) Almeria is a good alternative to resorts on the Costal del Sol etc. being quieter but still has plenty of bars and restaurant as well as the magnificent Alcazaba. Sadly the Civil war shelters are still closed for renovation.

A lot has been invested in Almeria's public realm since I last visited 7 years ago so the city is now, in my opinion, one of the best coastal locations in Andalusia. There are nice beaches, decent public transport links (which will be even better when the new railway improvement works are complete), lots of history and culture plus the city is much better value for money others, say Malaga or Seville. The bus from the airport is pretty frequent and reliable.

Almeria in the area of the apartment and surrounding streets is fantastic .Start at the top of the main street and explore all the streets on the left and right . There are some wonderful lively vibrant places to enjoy. The area is very Spanish which makes it so much better, If your looking for those horrible bits in some parts of Spain like English Breakfasts / Karaoke bars and English / Irish bars then your going to be disappointed.

When we arrived in Almeria, there was a music festival in full gear, which involved live music performances in the streets and squares of the old town. So my lasting impression of the city is joyous and bursting with life. It's also an ancient and historically significant city with so many fascinating areas to explore, which we did mostly on foot, and sometimes by bus. Taxis were also regulated and cheap. The old town has been beautifully restored, with shady avenidas and elegant squares rich in a variety of architectural periods, including modern. Highlights were El Cable Ingles at the port, the fabulous old train station, and the amazing, vast Alcazaba. Despite all these riches, it seemed less touristed than most comparable coastal cities such as Malaga and Alicante, and consequently more authentic. We absolutely loved it. If you haven't yet, go!

It was easy to get around the old part of the city by walking, otherwise there are taxis and buses. It has an interesting history and the local people we met were all friendly and tolerant of my rudimentary Spanish so I enjoyed speaking with them. (Not so many English speakers so that was good). We ate in lots of different restaurants, one of the favourites was La Hormiguita kiosk down by the harbour. The museums are interesting and free. The central market is worth a visit and has places to eat and drink. Next time I would think about hiring a car to visit some other places along the coast and inland.

The proberty is located directly in the city center and is really convinent to vist different places in Almeria. The apartment was really modern. The starter bag of the cleaning utilities( dishwasher tablet, washing machine tablet etc ) was from the hotel it was a big plus. My apartment had a projector and it is connected to netflix so you can enjoy your netflix with a really big screen. If you travel also with a car then HO can provide you a parking place for 10 euros a day.

The personnel was absolutely fabulous and super helpful. They did their best to accommodate our request to have twin bed room and as far away from the building work as possible. Gave us suggestions on what to visit. Helped call a taxi. The room was clean and beds and pillow super comfortable. The hotel is also in a great location. Breakfast was very varied and delicious. Will definitely stay there again if we come back to Almeria.

Rooftop pool. Location. Apart from the fact that Almeria is one big building site but no fault of the hotel. As we were disturbed with all the drilling outside they moved us to a quieter room immediately we asked
