This place was an unexpected total gem. We were a group of 9 people doing a pilgrimage through northern Spain, and this was by far one of our best experiences. Larañaga is a family owned business by Alfred, Maria, and their daughter Olatz. They welcomed our group with great attention and care. They made us feel like their own family. It probably helped that Maria seemed especially fond of our priest traveling with us :-) The rooms were spacious, clean, and almost luxurious. We were treated to dinner the first evening and breakfast the next morning with phenomenal Basque cuisine. The breakfast had a huge variety of homemade pastries and delicacies of Basque cuisine. I felt like this was a steal for the price they charged. Frankly, it seems ridiculous to me that this is listed as a 1 star hotel. It felt more like a 3-4 star hotel.

I spent three nights at Baiolei and left with a sense of serenity and immense gratitude. I was in Azpeitia as part of a documentary project about my Basque ancestors, and in two conversations with Ana, I discovered connections to the story I was working on. Her genuine generosity and commitment to the well-being of her guests and those who work at Baiolei are part of a way of being that simply welcomes those fortunate enough to arrive there. I'm sure this is the first of many stays to come.

We had hit something of a wall by day seven of a long trip. This hotel was a great antidote because we were able to sit in the very-lively outside restaurant and bar for a few hours. Caught up with communications, photos, enjoyed some drinks and a good dinner. Convenient location if you are planning to stay at the hotel for dining / entertainment. We had what must be their best room. Very large with windows along two whole sides, great views.

Highly recommended! Great stop on our Basque cycling tour and the small apartment with terrace was perfect for us on Easter Monday as we could cook a little dinner and run a load of laundry. Very friendly owner and pleasant rural setting with views. A few bar/cafes just up the small hill in town.

The weather, the people were nice.

The weather, the people were nice. Only thing be prepared to take the bus if you arrived by train at Zumarraga train station because it is difficult to get a taxi even if the Taxi booth is right in front of the train station

I was just passing by, staying for one night.

I was just passing by, staying for one night. Nevertheless I planned to assess the town as I enjoy the area and have plans to return for some hiking. The town is fairly compact and can easily be visited on foot, featuring an interesting pedestrian area along the river. On the main square I found a very lively youth event with an ongoing football-like match. Beyond this, the brief experience was not the best as I ended on a restaurant that felt to be touristic, with staff that were not particularly welcoming or attentive. The menu was very limited and the food also did not impress. I hope there are other more satisfying options in town.

Joseba and his family were super warm and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to make our stay great. The room was beautiful, with a traditional, arched stone ceiling and a balcony. The restaurant had an authentic, traditional ambience. Romantic (but affordable). We highly recommend Hotel Larranaga to anyone looking for a uniquely Spanish experience.

The location is rural, right above the town. This is a family-run hotel, and I was treated like family! Wonderful people, and it was a great experience to meet them all. The room was extremely stylish and elegant. Unlike me!! I rode my bike down to the town for pintxos and dinner. Lots of choice and very friendly, despite my murdering of their language😊

Great apartment for exploring Basque country. Excellent fit for family with 2 kids. Very well equipped with all necessary kitchenware. We visited Azpeitia during festive week and parking car required some creativity. Be prepared to be waken up by marching musicians along old city at 9am on Sunday. It was fun though.
