This place was an unexpected total gem. We were a group of 9 people doing a pilgrimage through northern Spain, and this was by far one of our best experiences. Larañaga is a family owned business by Alfred, Maria, and their daughter Olatz. They welcomed our group with great attention and care. They made us feel like their own family. It probably helped that Maria seemed especially fond of our priest traveling with us :-) The rooms were spacious, clean, and almost luxurious. We were treated to dinner the first evening and breakfast the next morning with phenomenal Basque cuisine. The breakfast had a huge variety of homemade pastries and delicacies of Basque cuisine. I felt like this was a steal for the price they charged. Frankly, it seems ridiculous to me that this is listed as a 1 star hotel. It felt more like a 3-4 star hotel.

Absolutely everything was perfect. I had the best night sleep on a comfy bed with a huge pillow. Best night of sleep I had while walking the Camino! Staff were helpful and welcoming. The location is perfect. The room I stayed in was recently renovated and had everything you need for a most pleasant stay! And the small balcony to people watch was a lovely surprise!

I was in Azpeitia as part of a documentary project about my Basque ancestors, and in two conversations with Ana, I discovered connections to the story I was working on. Her genuine generosity and commitment to the well-being of her guests and those who work at Baiolei are part of a way of being that simply welcomes those fortunate enough to arrive there. Reception service was incorrect ( no feedback on our complaints) service at the bar, terras, and Bistro was very slow, and bad due lack of staff. Food in Bistro is far below par. The room is too small, no privacy in the bathroom. Shower in the bathtub big no-no. Waist of time as we used this hotel as a transit hotel, but the hotel was far away from the highway, and was not worth the detour.

This is a stunning hotel in a beautiful, natural location despite its close proximity to the coast and major centres such as San Sebastian. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The location is quiet. We had dinner in the bistro both nights of our stay and the meals were very good and reasonably priced. The breakfasts were excellent. I'd love to visit here again and recommend the hotel as an alternative to the larger centres and their price tags.
