The rooms were comfortable, quirky in a good way, and quiet. The location is only 400 m from the Cathedral Square but far enough away that all was quiet when I wanted it to be.

FAQs about hotels in Santiago de Compostela

A Valuable City with Rich History

The city of Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the place where the Apostle St. James is buried. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its distinguished old monuments around the Cathedral and the tomb of St. James.

Made of granite, the spectacular Baroque facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela features massive bell towers and statues of St. James. The Obradoiro facade of the Cathedral is one of the most exceptional examples of the Spanish Baroque period.

Surrounded by magnificent buildings, the monumental square of Plaza do Obradoiro is one of the most historic squares in the world and the heart of Santiago. You can stay in one of the hotels, guesthouses or apartments Booking.com has near this majestic square.

The final destination of the medieval pilgrimage route El Camino de Santiago, this city is the best place to enjoy fresh fish and traditional Galician bread. Galicia is the seafood capital of Spain and the right place to savor Salpicón de Mar (seafood salad) and Pulpo á Feira (octopus cooked with salt).

The Christian pilgrimage route of the Way of St. James passes by Santiago de Compostela Airport, just 9 miles away from Galicia’s capital.

Santiago de Compostela is so much more than the end of a pilgrimage—it's a city of timeless beauty, quiet squares, magnificent architecture, and unforgettable atmosphere. We wandered its ancient streets, admired its remarkable craftsmanship, enjoyed wonderful Galician cuisine, and embraced the calm that makes this historic city so special. A place that invites you to slow down, look up, and simply be.

Great friendly city.

Great friendly city. Don't miss the park with the life-size statues of 2 strong women who protested against injustice eg unfair employment practices (can't remember their names) Also there is a great view of the cathedral from the park . Go to the pilgrim's Mass to see the giant incense burner swinging right across the transverse. What an amazing sight and one priest sings with a fabulous tenor voice good enough for the opera house. Can't remember where we ate but there are lots of good places near the park entrance

Clearly, people have different reasons for walking a Camino.

Clearly, people have different reasons for walking a Camino. The Camino Frances at some 800k isn't something to take lightly, but with reasonable fitness and preparation, it is a wonderful experience. I must say made easier by booking accommodation with booking.com so that reservations can be cancelled/adusted if required - thank you. The walk isn't just about reaching the destination, but the people of so many nationalities that you make friends/acquaitances with. Some you only pass with a Buen Camino, but seeing them every so often, some day apart, you greet them like long-lost friends. You don't have to walk 800k, there are many different Caminos much shorter.

Try to stay close to the old town then everything is walkable. Do some restaurant research beforehand and make bookings for dinner - it gets very crowded in the evenings. Highly recommend O Curro da Parra which is down an alleyway - superb food. Take the rooftop tour of the cathedral. Superb view and interesting tour - only 60 minutes which is perfect in the heat.

There is no better place to stay in Santiago. The history of the hotel combined with the stunning architectural features and interior courtyards make it an oasis of comfort. The rooms are large and light - the social areas are nicely appointed and the breakfast is among the best one will find. The staff are highly professional and helpful.

The best thing about the Hotel Montes is the staff. They are awesome. Helpful, engaging, polite and good humoured. The hotel is in a lovely square just next to the Cathedral. Easily the best place we have stayed in our many trips to Santiago. The room we had was gorgeous.
