The staff was welcoming and gracious and full of helpful tips for restaurants and enjoying the island via bike. The breakfasts were exceptional, such fun to enjoy each morning. We stayed 5 nights. we thought it was going to be rather expensive to eat out...
we thought it was going to be rather expensive to eat out but we were pleasantly surprised. We had breakfast at our hotel every morning. We visited local food markets everyday and bought various items for our lunch to take away and eat elsewhere. It was a good way to try lots of other different foods and the stall holders were very good and ready for us with their little take away pots and wooden forks (although I did have my own) So that just left us evening meal and the places we went we found reasonably priced. We had an electric bike each for two days which enabled us to visit the majority of the villages on the island although it would have been nice to spend longer in some of them. We managed to go up the lighthouse (phare des baleines) a very lovely experience and had a lovely Martiniere ice cream when we came down (257 steps I think) cos we deserved it:) Was glad to give the bikes back but we saw so much while we had them, so it was worth getting them. I cant believe the ground we covered. For the last two days we used the free, efficient shuttle bus and did quite a lot of walking. So loved it here, we met lovely people from all over europe and USA. I would like to think we will return one day and have already told lots of friends it's a place not to be missed. Au revoir

We like St.
We like St. Martin as it has a nice vibe with great restaurants and fantastic sunsets. It is an excellent base to explore the rest of the island from. Touring the island by bike is a great way to see other villages and take some gentle exercise. If you want to pop over to La Rochelle, the bus at Cognac Jay takes you there in an hour for €2.50. Taxis are hard to come by and need booking in advance so just be mindful. There are also a number of free shuttle buses if cycling is not for you.

A beautiful ancient town with sympathetic additions over the centuries. Lots to do and see and a bikers paradise allowing safe journeys around the whole island. Have been before many times and still our special place to visit.

A fantastic Island off the west coast of France by La Rochelle. I would recommend it 100% to any visitor who is looking for a peaceful, charming, safe, trip to an unspoiled beautiful Island. I would recommend a visit in early June, the weather was perfect, not too hot and early enough to avoid the influx of visitors which they get in July and August. I would definitely return !

A really easy town to walk around and connected to the free navette service which covers the island, The harbour is really interesting and the local restaurants contain quite a few gems. Local tourists complain the prices are a bit higher than the mainland and that is probably true (maybe 20% on a meal?) but you are getting a much better offering. You might get a cheaper galette in Fouras, but you won't get razor clams this good. At the time I was here the bridge cost 8 Euro to cross onto the island (free leaving the island.) Telepeage works on the bridge just fine. Cycle routes on the island are brilliant if you are that way inclined.

There were a lot of eating places as the port is geared up for visitors. We had meals in 4/5 star restaurants as well as some snacks during the day.
St- Martin - de -Re is a very walkable place and ythe port is nice sit and have a drink/meal.
It is a quiet place at night more suitable to older adults.
The tourist office staff were very helpful and there is a free frequesnt shuttle bus that takes you around the town

Location very close to the central harbour area, great staff, lovely breakfast.
Our son had an online presentation for his university and the staff found a quiet room with Internet for him to do this. Special mention to Amadou for arranging this for him, and the hotel manager.
