The hotel has historic roots going back to the 18th century and Louis the XVI, beautifully renovated and comfortable. The staff was welcoming and gracious and full of helpful tips for restaurants and enjoying the island via bike. The breakfasts were exceptional, such fun to enjoy each morning. We stayed 5 nights. we thought it was going to be rather expensive to eat out...

we thought it was going to be rather expensive to eat out but we were pleasantly surprised. We had breakfast at our hotel every morning. We visited local food markets everyday and bought various items for our lunch to take away and eat elsewhere. It was a good way to try lots of other different foods and the stall holders were very good and ready for us with their little take away pots and wooden forks (although I did have my own) So that just left us evening meal and the places we went we found reasonably priced. We had an electric bike each for two days which enabled us to visit the majority of the villages on the island although it would have been nice to spend longer in some of them. We managed to go up the lighthouse (phare des baleines) a very lovely experience and had a lovely Martiniere ice cream when we came down (257 steps I think) cos we deserved it:) Was glad to give the bikes back but we saw so much while we had them, so it was worth getting them. I cant believe the ground we covered. For the last two days we used the free, efficient shuttle bus and did quite a lot of walking. So loved it here, we met lovely people from all over europe and USA. I would like to think we will return one day and have already told lots of friends it's a place not to be missed. Au revoir

This hotel is a bit of walk from the centre and the bus stops so better if you have a car or bike or are happy and able to walk. The town is quiet but we loved that, a few good places to eat and have coffee. We had a pool at our hotel which was great, the only thing that would make it better would be a beach that you could swim from. If you like peace and old town beauty it’s a lovely relaxing place to go

For convenience to the airport and La Rochelle, this was an ideal location in which to stay on Île de Ré. In September it was already a bit sleepy but the bicycle paths and public transport ensured that it's easy to see other towns and the city too. Be aware that public transport from La Rochelle finishes early on weekdays after the summer peak.

Even though La Flotte doesn’t have the broad sandy beaches like those on the other side of the island, it has a delightful village atmosphere and an abundance of restaurants and bars. La Flotte is connected to the rest of the island by the free shuttle bus, the 150 bus from La Rochelle, or as is very popular, by bicycle. There are many dedicated cycle paths and the island is flat. St. Martin is nominally the central point of Ile de Re and the arrival port for the ferry from La Rochelle. La Flotte is 10 minutes away by shuttle or bus. Dining in La Flotte I highly recommend Chez Nous Comme Chez Vous, for excellent cuisine.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The location is excellent - it is very private, and if bikes are your main mode of travel, Saint Martin and La Couarde are only a 15-minute cycle away. La Bois beach is only a 7-minute cycle away.

The village is a bit far from everything so you have to drive around. Two beautiful beaches within 20 minutes. My favourite place on Ile de Ré actually is Ars-en-Ré, a lovely quaint village with its whitewashed streets, its unique church, cascading flowers (jasmine!) everywhere, charming shops (cheaper and not as touristy as in Saint-Martin) and nice restaurants.

We like St.

We like St. Martin as it has a nice vibe with great restaurants and fantastic sunsets. It is an excellent base to explore the rest of the island from. Touring the island by bike is a great way to see other villages and take some gentle exercise. If you want to pop over to La Rochelle, the bus at Cognac Jay takes you there in an hour for €2.50. Taxis are hard to come by and need booking in advance so just be mindful. There are also a number of free shuttle buses if cycling is not for you.
