The place was great, with breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and stunning sunsets. The hotel staff were friendly, welcoming, and incredibly helpful throughout our stay. I ran into an issue with my rental vehicle, and both the owner and staff stepped in right away without hesitation—they really went above and beyond. The location is fantastic—just a 10-minute drive from Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, and Bowmore distilleries, plus right next to a great rum distillery and beer brewery. It’s also only about a 30-minute drive to Caol Ila (home of Johnnie Walker) and the ferry to mainland Scotland. Highly recommend this place, and I’m already planning on coming back!

In order according to the headings for the ratings.... Staff.... extremely friendly and welcoming. Warm and inviting, making jokes and reassuring us about queries we had made. For anyone that has never visited the Islands....people are friendly just accept it. Facilities.... We have literally nothing to complain about. I was going mad trying to figure out what the fragrance was in the foyer to the Ardbeg room and I discovered it before checking out. Sandalwood and leather. Clean.... impressively clean. Shower and bath for whatever you feel like. Comfortable....so comfortable we slept in each morning. We had every Intention of getting up early but couldn't. Value....some may dither about the price but I was here to celebrate my dad's 70th father and son style. You cannot put a price on those memories in such a location. Suffice to say I was happy to pay the price I paid. I will pay that again. Well worth it. Location....what can I say that's bad about Islay. Midges. That's my only observation. Thank you Lochindaal see you again sometime.

It’s way more than B&B. Jim and Caroline’s hospitality makes you feel you’re a guest of a super nice Islay family. You get to learn more about Islay culture and lifestyle while having your freshly cooked breakfast. Thanks to them, our trip was much more memorable. We’d stay there again next time.

What Guests Said About Port Ellen:

Port Ellen is quite pretty with colourful harbour houses.

Port Ellen is quite pretty with colourful harbour houses. Only a few restaurants and pubs. Particularly enjoyed Ardbeg House for both wonderful character in both the bar and restaurant. The bar has a wonderful beer garden. 100 yards from guest house The attraction to Islay for me was the Whisky and you can walk the distillery path from the guest house and if you have had too many samples book a taxi back to town. We were very well looked after at the guest house with provision made for my wife's gluten free requirments.

Just a great location to visit Islay - especially the south part. The ability to walk to hotels straight from the ferry is so nice, And just to say, Ardbeg House Hotel would not be out of place in the middle of a big city - its spectacular

Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers.

Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers. There are many great distilleries in walking distance (Port Ellen, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and soon another one) and many more by bus or taxi (but taxis are sometimes hard to get and there is no Uber available).

Pubs/bar - try all of them (only 3 if including Sea Salt Bistro). I only had time to visit one and chose unwisely - the Ardview Inn and wasn't impressed (only a snapshot - maybe depends on the staff at the time) and LOCAL Finlaggan beer there was £2 more than other pubs and inns I visited in the island (over £7 vs £5 elsewhere!) But it's good beer - buy it at the Coop or another pub. Views beautiful from the harbour front. Use the Coop and make your summer picnic on one of the four benches provided. The town up keep is good. Clearly looked after by all involved including local council. 3 mile whisky trail. Get bus back from Ardbeg. But do check out the 4m plus standing stone near Portintruan.

Beautiful location, small but great for a few day's stay or a week. Lot's to see and do if you like or love Scotch. The Woolen Mill was a beautiful scenic location with lovely staff (https://islaywoollenmill.co.uk/ ). Port Ellen is tiny by city standards, but that's why we love it and it's local people - who are all very friendly and ready to chat about this or that. We look forward to our next visit. Only advice is book everything in advance is you can (flights, transportation, hotel, tours, etc.) Cheers! Lousha and Haggis

Lovely, small and scenic, set around a beautiful bay and...

Lovely, small and scenic, set around a beautiful bay and also with a ferry terminal (note, this was main reason I selected Port Ellen for the destination of my final 3 nights on Islay; unfortunately, just before the trip, CalMac had announced that all ferry trips to/from Port Ellen would be diverted for the period from early Sept through mid-November to Port Askaig (on the eastern side of Islay). Since traveling that direction via bus can have a more difficult bus schedule to coordinate with the early ferry (for connecting at Kennacraig on the mainland to bus to Glasgow), so I ended up booking a Loganair flight back to Glasgow for 9/28 to ensure getting there in time for my early a.m. long-haul journey GLA/AMS - AMS/SFO on 9/29. In general the town has wonderful dining options, scenic walks, both a small Co-Op and a Spar as grocery options, fantastic aged stone buildings, and the paved whisky trail at the far end of town to get to Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg on foot or bicycle, and if you have the energy (and often good rain-gear), you can keep going a few miles further on foot to the historic Kildalton Cross and Chapel. And I would be remiss to not mention the lovely flock of swans at the north end of White Hart Beach!!!

Great location, a 10 minute walk away from Port Ellen and a really good size (easily fitting up to around 6 people - although we only had 3). Kitchen was well equipped, lots of heaters dotted around to keep the place warm and overall we felt that it was good value for money. Would definitely stay again next time visiting the island
