This property is owned by the Raby estate It is the most beautiful boutique hotel in the area. From the luxurious bed linens to the food I booked half board and it was a very good deal , plus they gave us vouchers for free entry to Raby Castle is a must see..plus the high and low force waterfalls don’t miss them

Ideal location for all local tourist spots and exploring...

Ideal location for all local tourist spots and exploring area and local village a toddle along road, for anything you may require from COOP store, as you always forget something and a top up shop if having a longer stay. Plus found friendly locals to be very knowledgeable with information of what to see and do. I would recommend all day for Raby Castle, Bowes Museum. Heritage train journey from Stanhope to Bishop Auckland return is great value for money and platform Cafe. Also Stanhope is worth a toddle about and cross the valley and scenic road to Barnard Castle itself.

What a glorious place.

What a glorious place. It is so peaceful, you can hear the birds sing and just feel so relaxed. Great location in the area to explore. Ate in the pub and had reasonably priced home made pub food which was very good. St Johns Chapel is a small place but surrounded by hills, meadows and views to enjoy. If I came again would stay for longer to explore.

St John's Chapel is a lovely little village, with everything you could want for a weekend getaway. A cafe, a Co-Op and a couple of pubs supplemented by events at the village hall make this ideal for a short break, with plenty of places to visit nearby.

Superb location for walks - Mineral Valleys' Project Walk and the Wear Way Walk - two you can do from Saint Johns Chapel. However, great location for extensive walking. :-) Delightful cafe - The Chatterbox Cafe. Delicious food. Two pubs - both had good reviews. Co-op. A couple of craft shops. Very friendly and lovely locals. Clean and tidy 'village'. On bus route.

Its a pleasant place to visit and it feels as if you are stepping back in time as it retains the character of the past but this is balanced against providing modern living facilities. The nature is amazing and for energetic people it provides miles of perfect hiking opportunities. Its worth a visit if you want to spend time in a quiet, calm space
