My family loved our stay at New Yokote. The staff went out of our way to make our stay as seamless as possible including helping us with our luggage back to Tokyo. We stayed in a traditional Japanese style room which was lovely. The breakfast and dinner were also amazing with lots of traditional Japanese dishes. Thank you for an amazing stay!

We were in Yamanouchi in the spring.

We were in Yamanouchi in the spring. The cherry blossoms along the river we gorgeous and contrasted with the snow topped peaks of the mountains. The town was pretty chill, nice little cafes like the sun cafe and a cool beer cafe called the WDAY Cafe and Bat. The temple walk and the visit to the snow monkeys just gorgeous. To get to the snow monkeys is a tough walk up into the mountains- not for the faint hearted but you can drive up or take a bus up. It

So pretty and cozy.

So pretty and cozy. We didn't stay long but everyday we spent there was a joy. Everyone was so nice and helpful, there was so much good food and everything feels really personal and local. Make sure you have a plan B for food as the restaurants are small and availability depends on how busy they are - hours vary because of this. Bring cash and plan your meals and you should be good to go!

Not much to do besides onsen, skiing and the monkey park.

Not much to do besides onsen, skiing and the monkey park. Restaurants close based on the movement so opening times on google maps are not accurate. Some of them do not welcome tourists, they are open for locals and "sold out" for tourists. I'm writing this review on the peak of the Takichi government so things can change if you're it after some years. If you intend to ski, just get the skii resort, restaurants are better and closer to the skiing point. If you stay at the Shibu onsen, the buses for the skiing points are not frequent and are really expensive. If you're looking for the onsen, the public ones won't be better than the private hotel ones so book a ryokan with a good onsen. Finally, I do not really get the hype with Jigokudani Monkey Park. There's a lot of manmade structures and objects around so do not expect a "natural reserve" or "monkey sanctuary". Also, it's crowded.

Monkey Park was worth a 1 day visit, and we even saw the elusive serow. However, not necessarily easy to get to. Bus ride, then long uphill walk on slippery asphalt to even longer (but better maintained) hike to entrance. If not skiing or really into public hot springs, not many restaurants or other attractions around.

Yamanouchi / Shibuonsen is a must see for travelers, especially in winter. The snow monkey park is small but amazing (prepare to walk a lot on slippery slopes though). The 9 onsens in Shibuonsen are worth the trip.

My tip - get there early!

My tip - get there early! We managed to get there early enough when there was a decent amount of tourists, but not a massive swarm that made it hard to move and see (for the short ones in our group). Please tourists, abide by the rules - it was sad to see some people had ignored the no food/drink signs. Be warned if you have a pram - you have to leave it at the bottom of the stairs and there's still a long walk ahead. Be warned if you're not sure of your footing and you're there in the depths of winter and it's a little icy - we saw two people hit the ground hard, and many more did the ol' Risky Business slide and recover. While we didn't use crampons, but they were available from the last shop before you enter the trail. Worth seeing, even if a little weird with the snow monkeys just ignoring you as they move about amongst you. We didn't see them when there was any snow on the ground/pool, which would probably make it more magical.

Everything was amazing. We were picked up at the station and given a ride to the monkey park, which we enjoyed while our luggage was taken back to our room. The dinner we had at Yudanaka Yasuragi was the best meal I've ever eaten, absolutely worth the extra price. We were given a ride back to the train station after checking out. A truly incredible time, a MUST stay if you are visiting Yamanouchi. A short walking distance from the amazing views in town. Stay more than one night if you can - you won't regret it.

Rooms are extremely spacious for two people. We absolutely loved the onsens! We got to experience using the outdoor onsen whilst it was snowing which felt like a movie. The staff were amazing, providing a snow monkey shuttle every morning as well as a shuttle to and from Yudanaka station on request at no additional cost. The view from our room was my favourite part of the stay. This is the perfect hotel to stay at if you want to see the monkeys and experience the small onsen town of Yamanouchi.

Wonderful ryokan experience at very reasonable price.Large room, comfortable base for futon style bedding.Kaiseki dinner was amazing.Wonderful staff. Dropped our luggage at second hotel in Shibu onsen. Very few places open for dinner in the town, as close to the end of season, recommend booking half board.
